A New Study by the Brazilian Geological Service Rekindles Hope of Finding Large Gold Deposits in the Pernambuco Outback. The Released Map Details Precisely Where the Metal May Be Concentrated, Based on Geological, Geochemical, and Geophysical Analyses of the Serrita and Salgueiro Region.
The arid Pernambuco outback, marked by drought and the resilience of its people, may be about to enter the map of the country’s major gold producers.
A study by the Brazilian Geological Service (SGB), published on July 15, 2025, brought new data about the presence of the precious metal in the territory.
The “Gold Prospectivity Map of the Serrita-Salgueiro District” ignites hope for the region’s economy and for the national mineral sector.

The survey is part of the Gold Brazil Project and focuses on identifying areas with high potential for gold occurrences, based on modern and sustainable geological criteria.
This material serves as a strategic guide for future explorations.
Mapping Reveals Promising Signs
The Serrita-Salgueiro region has always attracted the attention of geologists.
Located in the Borborema Province, it features a complex composition of ancient rocks and tectonic structures. This geological configuration favors the formation of mineral deposits.
To create the new map, the SGB used an integrated methodology that combines geological, geochemical, and geophysical data.
The technique of overlapping multiple classes was essential. It allows assigning weights and scores to different factors indicative of gold.
Areas with stronger signals—such as specific rocks, geological structures, and chemical anomalies—are highlighted in the study.
This method helps reduce risks and optimize mineral exploration efforts, pointing out where the presence of gold is most likely.
The Three Pillars of Prospecting
The gold prospecting model in Serrita-Salgueiro is based on three fundamental pillars of economic geology.
The first is the Source of Fluids, Metals, and Ligands.
Gold is transported by hydrothermal fluids that circulate through the rocks. The presence of granitic bodies, such as those of the Serrita Suite, indicates these sources.
Furthermore, gravimetric anomalies in the underground point to possible granitic intrusions.
The second pillar is the Source of Energy. The formation of gold deposits requires energy to move the fluids.
The granites of the Serrita Suite also fulfill this role. Geophysical data, such as the analysis of the second derivative of the gravimetric anomaly, help locate these areas of greater energy activity.
Finally, the third pillar is the Conduits for Fluid Migration. Geological faults, shear zones, and structural lineaments are the pathways that fluids travel to deposit themselves.
The SGB map identifies several deep structures and intersections, considered strategic locations for gold concentration.
Where Gold Deposits
In addition to the conduits, the study identifies the Gradients for Ore Deposition. Gold precipitates in places where there are changes in physicochemical conditions. These changes occur in faults and fractures near the surface.
Another important signal is the geochemical anomalies. Elements such as arsenic, antimony, silver, cadmium, and lead, when found in stream sediments, indicate possible presence of gold, as they tend to appear together.
Most Favorable Rocks
Not all rocks are good for housing gold. The Lithostratigraphic Units most favorable identified on the map are the schists of the Salgueiro Complex and the granites of the Serrita Suite. In these rocks, quartz veins occur, the main hosts of so-called filonean gold.
This information allows mining companies and investors to focus their efforts where there are higher chances of success, saving time and resources.
Known Results Validate the Model
The model developed by the SGB was tested based on 37 known occurrences of gold in the region.
The result was encouraging: 35% of these occurrences coincided with areas classified as high and very high potential.
These areas represent only 8.5% of the total mapped area, which demonstrates the precision and effectiveness of the methodology used. This confirms that the study is not merely theoretical, but has immediate practical application.
Gold Mines and Placers Reinforce Potential
Most of the identified deposits have hydrothermal origins, with gold hosted in quartz veins. The main enclosing rocks continue to be the Schist of the Salgueiro Complex and the Granite of the Serrita Suite.
The map also lists various types of occurrences: placers, active and inactive mines, and still unexplored areas. Highlights include the Sítio Algodões / Batuta, Sítio Algodões / Proming, Sítio Gavião, Sítio Monte Alegre, and Cabaceiras I mines.
These operating mines help reinforce confidence in the region’s gold potential.
Practical and Strategic Tool
The new map is more than just a technical study. It functions as a strategic tool to guide investments and mineral exploration actions more safely, efficiently, and sustainably.
The goal is to stimulate responsible mining, with lower environmental impact and greater economic return for the region.
Opportunity for Pernambuco
The “Gold Prospectivity Map of the Serrita-Salgueiro District” arrives at an opportune moment. With global demand for gold rising and the search for economic alternatives in the northeastern hinterland, the study can pave the way for a new cycle of development.
The Pernambuco outback, historically marked by difficulties, can now become synonymous with opportunity. The revelation of areas with high mineral potential can attract investments and generate jobs, bringing direct benefits to local communities.
Based on precise data and advanced methodology, the map represents a turning point in the geological history of the state.
A Shining Future
The discoveries made by the Brazilian Geological Service show that the Pernambuco outback has much more than dry soil and strong sun. Beneath the land, a golden future may be hidden.
If the next steps are taken with responsibility, environmental respect, and planning, gold can stop being just a distant dream and become a new reality for Pernambuco and for Brazil.
