High-end vessel combines expedition technology, reduced capacity, and luxury comparable to five-star resorts, catching attention upon arrival in Rio with a proposal that combines exploration of remote regions and exclusive experience for a few passengers.
The Scenic Eclipse docked at Pier Mauá in Rio de Janeiro on April 2, 2025, at the end of the 2024/2025 cruise season, bringing to the carioca terminal a rare model of vessel that combines expedition operation, reduced capacity, and high hospitality standards.
Designed to accommodate up to 228 guests and limited to 200 passengers on polar voyages, the ship was conceived for routes in remote areas and severe navigation conditions, but with service akin to that of a high-end hotel, in a proposal that the market classifies as “discovery yacht”.
This profile helps explain why the vessel attracts attention even in a port accustomed to receiving giants of maritime tourism.

Cities on the verge of depopulation are paying residents to not disappear from the map: a program that started with Italian villages selling houses for €1 is now advancing through the United States, Spain, and Portugal with bonuses of up to US$15,000, free internet, and tax exemptions to try to curb the demographic collapse.

With 18 levels carved into the rock and a capacity for 20,000 people, Turkey’s gigantic underground city was a complete refuge with churches, schools, water, and ventilation, created to keep an entire population hidden and protected.
Instead of betting on volume, the Scenic Eclipse prioritizes space, individualized service, and access to remote destinations, outside the traditional circuit.
Expedition structure and technology for extreme regions

The technical base of the ship was designed for exploration trips, with Polar Class 6 rating, reinforced stabilization system, and features aimed at navigation in extreme environments.
These characteristics allow itineraries in regions such as the Arctic and Antarctica, where conditions require specific technical preparation.
On top of the vessel, there are two Airbus H130-T2 helicopters.
The structure also includes a personal submersible, Zodiac boats, kayaks, and other equipment that expand exploration possibilities.
The Scenic Neptune submarine can reach depths of up to 300 meters, allowing underwater observation in controlled conditions.
However, there is a relevant operational caveat.
During its passage through Brazil, the helicopters and the submersible do not operate, although they are part of the ship’s permanent structure.
Still, the presence of these resources positions the Scenic Eclipse as a hybrid vessel between tourism and scientific exploration.
High-end suites and experience comparable to resort

If the exterior resembles a technical ship, the interior takes the opposite direction and prioritizes absolute comfort.
There are 114 suites, ranging from 32 to 247 square meters, all with private balconies and butler service.
The vessel also offers a spa of about 550 square meters, a gym, yoga and pilates studios, as well as multiple dining options.
In total, there are up to 10 culinary experiences and nine bars and lounges, reinforcing the premium hospitality standard.
Instead of large crowds, the model bets on a ratio close to one crew member per guest.
This allows for personalized service, fewer lines, and greater exclusivity throughout the journey.
Circulation on board tends to be quieter, with lower passenger density and more comfortable use of common spaces.
Reduced capacity and different proposal than mega-cruisers
The contrast with large ships is evident. While transatlantic liners can carry thousands of passengers, the Scenic Eclipse maintains a reduced limit.
This operational choice allows access to smaller ports and less explored destinations.
At the Port of Rio, the difference stood out alongside vessels with more than six thousand passengers.
The Scenic Eclipse, on the other hand, caters to a more restricted audience focused on exclusive experiences.
The proposal combines movement with observation, exploration, and privacy, central characteristics of the luxury segment.
Estimated value and positioning in the luxury market
The ship is often associated with a value close to R$ 3 billion, a figure recurring in disclosures and approximate conversions.
Still, international estimates on the construction cost vary and do not point to a single consolidated number.
Even with this variation, the positioning of the Scenic Eclipse is clear within the market.
The combination of technology, low occupancy, and high service standards places the vessel among the most sophisticated in the segment.
Upon passing through Rio de Janeiro, the ship highlighted a model that unites exploration structure and five-star hotel comfort.
This balance between extremes defines the vessel’s proposal and explains its prominence compared to traditional cruises.
