Toyota Surprises The Brazilian Automotive Market With The Registration Of The Mini Hilux, Promising To Arrive Simple And Cheap To Shake Up Sales Of Rivals Toro And Montana

The Toyota Hilux, the best-selling mid-size pickup in Brazil, has an initial price of R$ 219,090 for the chassis version, dedicated to work. However, the Japanese giant plans to introduce an even simpler and cheaper version of the truck in the Brazilian market, called Hilux Champ. Nicknamed mini Hilux, the new pickup is expected to arrive at R$ 100,000 to annihilate the Fiat Toro and Chevrolet Montana.

Finally, Toyota registered the Hilux Champ with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) last week, revealing not only small details but also internal parts and the truck’s bumper. This indicates that the mini Hilux may be in the manufacturer’s plans for Brazil.

If this materializes, it is likely that production of the truck will begin in Zárate, Argentina, where Toyota already manufactures the Hilux and Hiace, the brand’s van. Both vehicles use the same platform as the Hilux Champ.

Features Of The Toyota Mini Hilux

The Toyota Hilux Champ was launched at the end of 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand, after being presented for the first time at the previous year’s Japan Mobility Show.

In terms of dimensions, the pickup measures 5.30 meters in length, 1.78 meters in width, 1.73 meters in height, and 3.08 meters in wheelbase. For comparison, the Hilux sold in Brazil measures 5.32 meters in length, 1.85 meters in width, 1.81 meters in height, and 3.08 meters in wheelbase.

The load capacity of the Hilux Champ is 1,000 kg. The bed features several holes for bolts, allowing accessories to be easily attached and removed, customizing the vehicle as needed.

Mini Hilux May Arrive In Brazil With A 2.7 Turbo Gasoline Engine With 166 Hp And 24.9 Kgfm

In Thailand, the Hilux Champ is available with three engine options. The first is a 2.4 turbo diesel engine with 150 hp and 35 kgfm of torque. The second option is a 2.0 turbo gasoline engine with 130 hp and 18 kgfm, while the last configuration offers a 2.7 turbo gasoline engine with 166 hp and 24.9 kgfm. The available transmissions are a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic in all versions.

In the Thai market, prices start at 459,000 Thai baht, which is approximately R$ 49,890. In Brazil, prices are expected to be slightly higher, but the mini Hilux promises to arrive in the range of R$ 100,000, making it much cheaper than its larger sibling, sold for over R$ 200,000.
