The news that the Yaris hatchback would not get a new generation left many people sad. After all, we are talking about one of the most loved cars in the Brazilian market. But as the saying goes, “Those who leave their own don’t degenerate.” Toyota already has a new trump card up its sleeve, and its name is AYGO X.
The hatchback segment is no longer as profitable as it once was. The trend is clear: SUVs and sedans are dominating sales. With that in mind, Toyota decided to focus on the new generation of its sedan and its compact SUV.
But don’t think that the Japanese automaker will leave the entry-level market unprotected: the AYGO X comes to fill that gap and, as they say, “arrived with a bang.”
Built on the new modular platform GB, which is smaller than the TNG, the AYGO X is truly compact. It measures 3.70 meters in length, has a wheelbase of 2.43 meters, and weighs only 980 kg. And the best part: the trunk has a capacity of 261 liters. It’s no wonder it is being seen as the car that will “destroy all the competition.”

Hyundai sells a “sporty compact SUV” cheaper than Jeep Renegade, Volkswagen T-Cross, and Honda HR-V in Brazil; for about R$ 56,000 in conversion without taxes, the Venue N Line has a 1.0 turbo engine with 120 PS, manual or DCT transmission, dual exhaust, level 2 ADAS, 6 airbags, and a sports package that Hyundai sells in India but does not offer to Brazilians.

New Brazilian Fiat Fastback with a hybrid flex engine of up to 180 hp and a range of over 1,000 km will give rise to the new “affordable” Chrysler SUV in the US, in a project aiming to increase the brand’s sales to 225,000 cars by 2030.
Engine, Efficiency, And Advanced Technology
The AYGO X comes equipped with a naturally aspirated 1.0 three-cylinder engine, exclusively gasoline. It delivers up to 72 horsepower, but what really impresses is the fuel efficiency: in mixed driving, it averages up to 21.88 km/l. Who would have thought that a gasoline car could be so economical?
It’s not just about efficiency for the AYGO X. The car is also packed with technology: adaptable full LED headlights, digital climate control, wireless phone charging, and even a Premium JBL sound system. And there’s more: the multimedia system is the same one that equips the current Corolla line here in Brazil, with 9 inches and offers a rearview camera and native GPS.
Another notable aspect is safety. The AYGO X already comes with disc brakes with ABS, traction and stability controls, and four airbags. Not to mention the more expensive versions, which also add collision alerts, autonomous emergency braking, and even adaptive cruise control (ACC).
Competitors And Market
The new AYGO X arrives in an increasingly competitive market, with the arrival of BYD and its 100% electric hatchback expected in 2024. Still, it has everything to be a success, especially for those who still have prejudice against electric or Chinese cars.
Toyota seems to have found the ideal replacement for the Yaris. With prices estimated between R$ 90,000 and R$ 110,000, the AYGO X has everything to become a sales success and consolidate Toyota’s presence in the compact segment. So, do you already know what your next car will be?
