Toyota Introduces New Models in the National Market Challenging BYD and GWM’s Hegemony with Its Affordable Electric Cars.
With the arrival of new manufacturers in the Brazilian market, such as BYD and GWM, Toyota is mobilizing to maintain its competitive position. The Japanese automaker is preparing to launch an offensive against its Chinese competitors in the automotive segment, with significant investments in new electric and hybrid cars, aiming to strengthen its presence in the national market.
New Electric Cars That Toyota Will Bring to the Brazilian Market
The Yaris Cross is a Japanese compact SUV that has been much speculated to arrive in Brazil with its European version; however, this year a new Philippine configuration of the car was launched, making this Toyota model the one that will arrive in Brazil.
Developed on the DNGA platform, a variant of compact cars from TNGA, where the Corolla and Corolla Cross are made, the new model has proven to be a very interesting car that indeed has the recipe for success in the Brazilian market, competing with BYD’s electric cars. With the size of a Hyundai Creta, the model measures 4.31 cm in length, 2.62 cm in wheelbase, 1.77 cm in width, 1.61 cm in height, and accommodates 405 L of luggage in the trunk.

The design is one of the strongest points of Toyota’s new car, resembling a mini Rav4, featuring a full LED optical set that includes fog lights, a hexagonal grille, 17-inch wheels, chrome window trim, as well as integrated rear spoilers and full LED lighting taillights.
Inside, Toyota’s new compact car to compete with BYD’s electric cars has a finish similar to the Corolla Cross, with not many soft-touch areas but with a leather strip on the dashboard and also on the doors.
New Electric Car from Toyota Features Several Technologies
The Toyota car has great interior space and the equipment list includes everything, even ACC with Stop/go function. Mechanically, the model will have the same hybrid setup offered abroad in the Brazilian automotive industry, but with the advantage of featuring Flex technology.
The system consists of a 1.5 naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine plus a self-recharging electric motor, totaling 130 combined horsepower, and Toyota has not disclosed the model’s torque, which will compete with BYD’s electric cars.
Although it’s not the king of performance, the public is currently more focused on fuel economy, and in this regard, the new model does very well, achieving averages of 19 km/l with gasoline. The new Yaris Cross will arrive here in 2024 with national production and will cost around R$ 120,000 to R$ 160,000 (for the more expensive versions with hybrid engines).
Another Model to Compete with BYD’s Electric Cars
The Yaris Ative, like the new Cross that was presented, was also launched in the Philippines. Bringing practically everything that the previously mentioned model has, but in a more spacious body and with a family feel, the new sedan model is a very promising car for the coming years, especially considering the advancements it has gained over the current generation compared to the new model available in Asia.
The Ative now features 16-inch wheels, a hexagonal grille, full LED headlights just like its lights. Inside, the sedan has evolved in finish, with a leather strip on the dashboard and larger leather areas on the door areas. The equipment list includes everything, including semi-autonomous driving assistants.
