According to Terra, on a sunny Tuesday morning, May 28, the Viracopos International Airport in Campinas (SP) was the scene of an unusual event: the auction of a rough emerald. This precious stone, extracted from the Caraíba Mine in Pindobaçu, northern Bahia, was auctioned for an impressive R$ 175 million. The minimum bid was R$ 115 million, but fierce competition among collectors and investors drove the price beyond expectations.

The emerald in question is a true treasure of nature. Standing 60 centimeters tall and weighing an impressive 137 kilograms, it is a rock block encrusted with light green emeralds. Imagine holding this stone in your hands! It is one of the largest emeralds ever found in Brazil and undoubtedly one of the most valuable.

Estimated Value and History of the Emerald

The gemological technical report reveals that the estimated value of this exceptional piece could reach even more impressive figures. According to experts, in an international auction, this emerald could be sold for amounts between US$ 30 to US$ 50 million. Converting to our currency, we are talking about R$ 154 million to R$ 256 million. It is as if the stone had its own shine, capable of attracting attention and well-filled wallets.

The Mysterious Past of the Emerald

Interestingly, this is not the first time this emerald has drawn attention. In 2017, a businessman from the city of Petrolina in Pernambuco acquired the stone for an incredible R$ 500 million. At the time, it was already considered a treasure, but its current value has surpassed all expectations.

The auction held by the Federal Revenue lasted just over an hour but left a mark in the history of Brazilian gems.
