The First Well That Petrobras Plans To Drill Is 500 Km From The Mouth Of The Amazon River
The President of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, announced that the state-owned company plans to explore oil and gas at the mouth of the Amazon River. In the video released, Prates argues that the first well that Petrobras plans to drill is 500 km from the mouth of the Amazon River, the same distance that separates Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
“The drilling of the first well will be a temporary job, with a projected duration of only 5 months. In nearly 7 decades of operation, we take pride in never having recorded a spill or blowout during offshore drilling activities. With the results from the investigation and drilling phase, society will have the right to know the real potential of this area, and from there we will deepen the debate on whether or not to continue the project”, says the President of Petrobras.
Project May Conflict With The Current Government’s Environmental Area
The project for oil and gas exploration at the mouth of the Amazon River may generate a conflict between the President of Petrobras and the federal government’s environmental area. During the 2022 campaign, the current President of the Republic defended environmental agendas and assured in several events his collaboration with proposals to reduce environmental impacts.

It is worth noting that, to move forward, Jean Paul Prates’ proposal in the oil and gas sector depends on approval from the Brazilian Institute of Environment (Ibama). Furthermore, the institute is subordinate to the federal government through the Ministry of the Environment.
Minister Ends Up Supporting Oil And Gas Exploration At The Mouth Of The Amazon River
In an interview with the Sumaúma website, Brazil’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Marina Silva seemed to support Petrobras’ project. The politician and environmentalist stated that she views oil and gas exploration at the mouth of the Amazon River with the same perspective she had of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant. “It is highly impactful, and we have the tools to deal with highly impactful projects”, she concludes.
The mouth of the Amazon River is part of the Equatorial Margin, an area considered a new exploratory frontier that extends from the coast of Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte. Considering the business plan until 2026, Petrobras plans to invest approximately US$ 2 billion in exploratory activities throughout the region.
