According to the 2020 indices, there is a great possibility that the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant will reach a new energy productivity record this year
With a mark of 55 million megawatt-hours (MWh) produced in 2020, the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant – the largest producer of clean and renewable energy on the planet – achieved a new record last Sunday (20). The productivity indicator has never been as high as it is this year. Nuclear Plant Angra 3 Works: Accumulators Manufactured by Nuclep Are on Their Way to the Plant

Month after month, the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant continues to break historical productivity records – the ratio between the amount of energy generated and the available water, meaning the water has never been used so efficiently at the plant.
By September 20, 2020, the average productivity (which shows the ratio between the amount of energy generated and the volume of water that passed through the generating units, that is, the turbine flow) was 1.0888 average megawatts per cubic meter per second (MWmed/m3/s), compared to the previous record of 1.0764 MWmed/m³/s in 2019.

According to the observations of the Brazilian General Director of Itaipu, General Joaquim Silva e Luna, the performance of the hydroelectric plant this pandemic year will be crucial for Brazil to have energy availability to boost the resumption of economic growth. “Itaipu is doing its part. We contribute with what we do best, which is generating quality electricity for Brazil and Paraguay.”

For the Technical Directorate of the plant, among the reasons for the success in utilizing the raw material, water, extracting the maximum possible energy generation from it, is mainly the relationship between production management and assets in the Binational.
“In a year of numerous hydrological difficulties and with a pandemic that greatly restricts our daily activities at the plant, the teams of the Technical Directorate, especially those in Operations and Maintenance, are working hard to maintain availability, reliability, productivity, and keep maintenance plans up to date,” says Itaipu’s Maintenance Superintendent, Marco Aurélio Siqueira Mauro. “This effort is rewarded with the production of over 55 million MWh by September. Few facilities exceed this number in the year.”
Measured Production of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant
The partial production of the hydroelectric plant in 2020 (the 55 million MWh recorded by this Sunday) would be enough to meet the electricity consumption of the entire world for 21 hours; of Brazil for one month and 12 days; of the city of São Paulo for two years; of Paraguay for three years and 11 months; of the state of Paraná for one year and nine months; or of 95 cities the size of Foz do Iguaçu for one year.
