Piauí Receives Million-Dollar Investment For The Construction Of A New Solar Photovoltaic Plant. The Venture Promises To Generate 1,200 Jobs In The Municipality Of Ribeiro Gonçalves.
The municipality of Ribeiro Gonçalves, located in the state of Piauí, is constructing a solar photovoltaic plant with a capacity of 393 MW. In total, the venture in the northeastern state will create over 1,200 jobs. The Cobra Brasil Group, a company from Spain, is responsible for the project.
Solar Photovoltaic Plant In Piauí Will Produce More Energy Than Boa Esperança Dam
Representatives from Cobra Brasil Group presented to Governor Rafael Fonteles last Thursday (05) the progress of the services, which currently employs 100 local people to work on the construction site.
According to Fonteles, the solar plant, when operational, will produce more energy than the Boa Esperança dam. Soon, the governor will visit the construction works of this venture that is under construction and generating thousands of jobs. The 393 MW solar photovoltaic plant is larger than the Boa Esperança plant, which was an energy revolution for the state of Piauí in the 1970s.

The world could operate on clean electricity by 2050, but a study indicates that this would require up to 20 TW of renewable energy, more than 9 million hectares for solar, and strong cooperation between countries.

New catalyst developed by scientists in the USA enhances the performance of water electrolysis without using platinum, reducing operational costs and expanding the potential of green hydrogen as a strategic alternative for industries, heavy transportation, and clean energy generation.

The era of solar panels attached to roofs is beginning to change with transparent glass that generates energy while keeping the view unobstructed, and perovskite photovoltaic windows already tested in offices in Japan promise to transform entire facades into invisible power plants without blocking light or altering the appearance of buildings.

The era of silicon alone in solar energy comes to an end with the arrival of perovskite, a material that captures a broader light spectrum, is applied as a thin film, and, together with silicon, reaches a theoretical limit of 45% efficiency in tandem modules.
The operations director of the Cobra Brasil group, José Carlos Hernandez, detailed that they have already begun the initial works at the construction site. The estimated start of activities for the solar park is set for November 2024. According to Hernandez, the company came to present to the governor the progress of the works in Ribeiro Gonçalves. It has been under development for three years.
More than 100 jobs have already been filled, machinery has arrived, and the company started environmental suppression works in August, which are necessary to meet the goal of delivering energy by the end of next year. Subsequently, land clearing and structure assembly will begin, and if all goes well, everything will be operational by November of next year.
Company Totals Investment Of R$ 4 Billion In Piauí
The governor of Piauí further emphasized the state’s potential in renewable energy generation, especially solar energy. Spanish investors have also discovered the state’s potential in photovoltaic energy generation.
Thus, he believes that Piauí will increasingly be a leader in renewable production. Jaime Llopis, CEO of Cobra Brasil, advocated for the importance of operating in a state like Piauí, in addition to the opportunities and returns that the plant will bring to the population.
According to the executive, a commitment to the state is being reinforced in this clean generation sector, which is so important. Generating energy is not just about generating electricity; it is about creating jobs, education, prosperity, and health—there is so much that comes from the panels. In addition to Ribeiro Gonçalves, the Cobra Brasil group has solar energy projects in the municipality of Cristino Castro. In total, the company’s works represent an investment of R$ 4 billion.
Piauí Is The Third State In The Ranking Of Renewable Energy Production
In July of this year, Piauí strengthened its prominent position in the country’s energy landscape, ranking third both in wind energy and solar energy production, according to the June report from the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL).
Thus, the state strengthens itself as a national reference in renewable energy generation. In solar energy production, in the centralized generation modality, which comprises large ventures, the production is 1.46 GW in operation, in addition to 867.22 MW under construction and expected to generate an additional 13.14 GW to be built.
Currently, in this sector, Piauí has 50 solar photovoltaic plants in operation, 27 under construction, and 337 yet to be built.
