The report indicates that about 1.34 km of land was contaminated by the spilled oil from Shell that originated from a rupture in the pipeline.
According to a report from the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), the oil spill was confirmed by SPDC’s Media Relations Manager, Mr. Bamidele Odugbesan, who stated that the investigation into the incident had been completed.

Shell Operational Accident in Nigeria Could Lead to Legal Action
The JIV report concluded that the oil spill in the Nigerian community was an operational accident due to equipment failure that affected nearby palm trees and fish ponds, and subsequently recommended remediation of the site.
This new spill in Nigeria is the latest in a series of oil spills by Shell that has put the multinational oil company in conflict with host communities.
A report highlights that Shell has reported over 1,000 spills with approximately 110,535 barrels of oil or 17.5 million liters lost since 2011, although some experts and stakeholders believe the number could be more realistic.
