Victims and Rescues
Among those rescued is Jairo, a resident of Tucuruí (PA), who was found alive. However, his wife and daughter are among the missing. At least eight people remain missing at this time.
The searches, conducted by the Fire Department, were interrupted during the night for safety reasons and will resume on this Monday (24).
The situation is worsened by the presence of two trucks transporting sulfuric acid, which fell into the river during the collapse, posing a risk of chemical contamination.
The City Hall of Estreito issued an alert, requesting that residents avoid any contact with the waters of the Tocantins River. Meanwhile, specialized teams are assessing the environmental impacts and assisting in the search efforts.
Authorities are investigating the causes of the collapse. The case reinforces the urgent need for oversight and maintenance of bridges and viaducts throughout Brazil. The history of neglect in critical infrastructures raises concerns about new accidents.
