Discover The Most Common Mistakes That Compromise The Longevity Of Tires And Directly Affect Your Safety And Economy. See How To Avoid Premature Wear With Simple Tips.

Many drivers, even the most experienced, make routine mistakes that severely compromise the durability of tires.

Although often treated as secondary items in vehicle maintenance, tires play an essential role in safety, performance, and economy.

Their lifespan, contrary to what many believe, does not follow a fixed pattern: it directly depends on usage practices, maintenance, and driving habits.

Experts warn that factors such as incorrect tire pressure, wheel misalignment, inadequate tire type usage, reckless driving, and even the use of inappropriate chemical products are among the main villains of premature tire degradation.

These failures, despite being common, can be avoided with simple yet effective measures.

According to Roberto Falkenstein, a consultant in Innovative Technologies at Pirelli for Latin America, in an interview with Terra, the longevity of a tire is directly related to variables such as inflation pressure, driving style, and the type of terrain traversed.

“At Pirelli, we advise consumers to adopt good maintenance practices instead of fixating on an exact number of kilometers driven,” said the specialist.

Incorrect Tire Pressure Accelerates Wear

One of the most common mistakes is neglecting proper tire pressure.

Tires with pressure below the ideal increase the contact area with the ground, generating more friction and heat, accelerating wear.

On the other hand, tires that are overinflated concentrate wear in the center of the tread and impair grip, making driving less safe and comfortable.

The recommendation is to check tire pressure weekly, preferably when they are cold and always according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.

This information can be found in the owner’s manual or on the label located on the driver’s door jamb.

Alignment And Balancing Prevent Premature Wear

A lack of alignment and balancing also contributes to irregular and premature tire wear.

Misaligned wheels compromise handling and cause uneven rubber consumption, which directly affects vehicle stability.

Poor balancing causes noticeable vibrations in the steering wheel, especially at high speeds, in addition to damaging the internal structure of the tire over time.

Experts recommend that these maintenance tasks be performed every 10,000 kilometers, or whenever the driver notices changes in the vehicle’s behavior, such as steering drift or vibrations.

Choosing The Right Tire Prevents Failures And Accidents

The incorrect choice of tire type for the terrain, load, or speed is another factor that reduces the longevity of the item.

Each model has specific characteristics of construction, grip, and resistance, being designed for certain conditions of use.

For example, using urban tires in off-road environments can lead to cuts, deformations, and premature wear.

It is also essential to respect the load index and speed limit defined by the manufacturer.

Ignoring these specifications compromises safety and accelerates the deterioration process of the compounds.

Brands like Pirelli offer lines targeted at different profiles, from urban use to 100% off-road models.

Driving Style Influences Tire Lifespan

The way a driver drives directly affects the integrity of the tires.

Sudden accelerations, violent braking, high-speed turns, and abrupt maneuvers increase friction, accelerating material wear.

Defensive driving extends tire life, reduces fuel consumption, and decreases wear on other vehicle parts.

Inadequate Products Compromise Tire Rubber

Another common mistake relates to tire cleaning.

The use of solvents, non-recommended waxes, and aggressive detergents damages the rubber composition, causing dryness, cracks, and loss of elasticity.

Besides compromising aesthetics, this affects safety and can lead to unexpected failures.

To preserve the original characteristics of the tire, it is best to use only products recommended by manufacturers, specially developed to maintain the integrity of the compounds without harming their structure.

Proper Maintenance Is A Guarantee Of Safety And Economy

Taking good care of tires is more than a money-saving practice.

It is an essential safety measure.

In addition to avoiding unnecessary expenses with premature replacements, proper maintenance ensures that the vehicle operates with stability and grip, even in adverse situations.

Specialized service centers, such as Pirelli Performance Centers, provide technical support and precise guidance for consumers who want to prolong the life of their tires.

These places have trained professionals to assess the condition of the compounds, indicate necessary maintenance, and recommend the most suitable model for each usage profile.

Neglecting Tires Can Lead To Risks And Losses

Although they are one of the most visible parts of the vehicle, tires often go unnoticed in maintenance routines.

Neglecting basic aspects such as tire pressure, alignment, and correct choice can not only lead to financial losses but also put the safety of vehicle occupants at risk.

After all, did you know that small habits might be shortening the lifespan of your tires and putting your safety at risk?
