New Gmail feature allows changing the main address while keeping Google account data preserved
Brazilian Gmail users have started receiving a new option to change the email address of their Google Account. The update allows replacing the name used before “@gmail.com” without creating a new account and without losing stored content.
Additionally, the change resolves an old issue for users who created addresses with nicknames, old names, or unprofessional combinations. Now, the account can receive a new digital identity while the history remains preserved.
Gmail feature arrives after more than 20 years of the platform’s existence
Initially, Gmail was launched by Google in 2004 and since then, millions of people have kept addresses created during adolescence or earlier moments in life.

For this reason, many users spent years using emails with names considered inappropriate for professional situations.
Now, according to information from the Google Account Help Center, the company has begun gradually offering the option to change the account’s main address.
However, the new feature may not appear immediately for all users, as the release happens progressively.
What happens after changing the Gmail address
After making the change, the new address will be used to access Google services, such as:
- Gmail;
- Google Photos;
- Google Drive;
- other services linked to the Google Account.
Additionally, the old address is not automatically deleted. It becomes an alternate email for the account.
Thus, messages sent to the old address continue to be received normally. The already stored data also remains available.
Therefore, old emails, photos, files, and saved information remain protected during the change.
Google recommends precautions before the change
Despite data preservation, Google recommends that users back up their information before the change.
This is because some settings of connected apps or services may need adjustments after the address update.
Additionally, users should check external services that use the old address as a login method.
Limitations for Changing the Gmail Address
Despite the new feature, there are some important rules.
Firstly, the change of the Gmail address can only be made under the conditions allowed by the Google Account.
Additionally:
- the user can revert to the old address whenever they want;
- it is not possible to create another address ending in “@gmail.com” in the same account for 12 months after the change;
- the new address cannot be deleted during this period.
According to Google’s documentation, there is also a limitation related to the frequency of changes.
How to Change the Gmail Address on the Computer
First, the user must access the Google Account settings.
Then, follow these steps:
- Go to myaccount.google.com;
- Enter Personal Information;
- Select Email;
- Choose Google Account Email;
- Check if the option “Change Google Account Email” appears;
- Enter the new available address;
- Confirm the change by following the instructions displayed on the screen.
If the option is not available, it means that the account has not yet received the feature or does not meet the necessary criteria.
Another Way to Change Gmail Information
Additionally, some settings can be found within Gmail itself.
The indicated path is:
- Open Gmail on the computer;
- Click on Settings;
- Select See all settings;
- Enter Accounts and Import or Accounts;
- Access Send mail as;
- Choose Edit info;
- Update the available data;
- Save the changes.
Thus, the user can adjust information related to sending messages.
