A Commercial Aircraft Has Been Sitting In The Middle Of The Bush Since The End Of Operations In 2004.
In the northeast of Puerto Rico, the image of a ghost airport catches attention: an American Airlines plane is sitting in the middle of a decommissioned runway, surrounded by bushes, silence, and empty buildings.
The scene, which looks like it’s straight out of a movie, is real. The aircraft, model McDonnell Douglas MD-82, registration N428AA, has been abandoned at the former naval base Roosevelt Roads, which was decommissioned in 2004.
Since then, the ghost airport has become a destination for curious individuals, influencers, and explorers of forgotten places.

An Entire Plane, Stuck In Time
The white fuselage, now marked with rust and graffiti, remains intact. It is still possible to see the giant wheels, the extended wings, and part of the interior preserved.
The aircraft appears to have been left there and forgotten. Visitors can walk inside, see the seats, the baggage compartments, and even the cockpit. The YouTuber Stringer Media visited the place and documented everything in a video.
As he approaches, he shows the dimension of the plane, highlighting the size of the tires and the still-solid metal structure. “It’s much larger in person than it seems when we’re boarding,” he comments while walking around the plane.
Part of the rear wing and tail is missing, and there are holes that resemble bullet marks. The windows remain intact. “Very difficult to break an airplane window,” he says.
Preserved Interior, Even With Abandonment
Inside, the scene is surprising. Most of the seats are still in place. Overhead compartments, bathrooms, safety hooks, and meal trays remain fixed. Some seats have been removed, but others remain intact. “This part here was probably the economy class, with five seats per row,” Stringer points out.
Further ahead, the first-class seats are visibly larger and more comfortable. “I don’t understand why they don’t put this on the other side too,” he jokes.
In the cockpit, most of the controls have been removed, but there are still buttons, levers, and even a tight access cover used by technicians for maintenance.
The History of Roosevelt Roads Base
The Roosevelt Roads naval base was built during World War II. It served the United States Navy for decades. In 2004, it was completely deactivated.
Since then, the hangars, runways, and administrative buildings have been empty. Vegetation has grown, structures have deteriorated, and some of the space has been informally occupied by explorers, photographers, and adventurers.
Stringer points out that there is an active runway nearby, but the area where the plane is parked has been closed off. “There are blockades at the end of the runway, so no one uses this part anymore,” he explains. Access is via road, near the city of Ceiba. Despite the abandonment, the lawn is still relatively well-maintained.
Transformation into an Educational Center
What few know is that, after the base closed, part of the location was repurposed as an educational center. An aircraft maintenance institute operated there for years.
The American Airlines plane was reportedly donated to the school for educational purposes. Students learned about mechanics, welding, and flight systems using the aircraft itself.
Classrooms, workshops, and laboratories were set up. There were computers, tools, and aircraft parts scattered throughout the buildings.
In one of the classrooms, it is still possible to see posters with information about aluminum alloys and welding. One of the abandoned papers shows the date 2018, indicating that the space was used until recently.
Exploring the School’s Buildings
Next to the plane, several hangars and rooms are full of materials. Old desktops, chairs, shelves, and technical manuals are still scattered around.
In one room, there are parts such as pistons, exhausts, and even structures welded by students. Another area seems to have been used as a painting workshop for parts.
“There’s everything here. Destroyed computers, manuals thrown on the floor, books about aircraft. It looks like they just abandoned everything overnight,” reports the YouTuber.
There are fans, boards, cabinets, welding carts, and instruments scattered throughout the hallways.
Classes Interrupted and Structure Left Behind
One of the most striking parts of the video is the visit to the classrooms. Despite the deterioration, many of them remain set up. Desks are piled up, boards with notes, and textbooks remain in place. In one of the classrooms, a book titled “Aircraft Basic Science” is left on a table. There are signs that the place was used until 2022.
Graffiti on the walls indicates that some people have passed through recently. Nevertheless, many of the objects remain intact. In one of the hallways, Stringer finds a weld made by a student, still preserved. “Not the best, but it was made with the intention to learn,” he comments.
Mystery About the End of Activities
There is no clear information about why the institute was closed. It is also unclear why the plane was not removed after the classes ended.
Some speculate that the project was abruptly interrupted. Stringer expresses sadness: “This was a golden opportunity. Learning to work with planes is something rare. And now everything is abandoned.”
The location appears to have been maintained with care until recently. In one of the technical areas, it is still possible to see expensive equipment, such as generators and air conditioning systems. A room named “Radar Control” raises questions about its use. Many items are intact, even with the structure in ruins.
A Reminder of the Military Era
The fuselage of the MD-82 remains a symbol of an era that has come to an end. Once part of a strategic base for the United States, the plane is now sitting under the sun, the target of cameras and curiosity. Visitors explore with respect, but the future of the site is uncertain.
“If you come here, explore carefully and don’t destroy anything. This is history,” warns Stringer at the end of the video. Despite the abandonment, the space still maintains its visual strength. A living reminder of a military base that turned into a school, and now has become a ruin.
This aircraft remains in Puerto Rico, unused and without a forecast for removal. The airport, which was once a symbol of military power and later educational hope, is now a silent field of memories.
