The Project Is Budgeted at R$ 286 Million, Expected to Start in March 2023, Generating About 1,200 Jobs Both Direct and Indirect
The Municipal City of Rio de Janeiro signed a contract for the first stage of the Campo Grande Road Connection works, a neighborhood in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro recently, which will generate another project in OEC’s portfolio and job creation.
OEC – Engineering and Construction will be responsible for executing the project, which includes roadworks connecting Estrada da Caroba and Estrada da Posse through the construction of a tunnel under the Luiz Bom rocky massif, geometric adaptation of surrounding streets, and construction of a trench at the intersection of Estrada do Monteiro with Avenida Cesário de Melo.
What Is the Scope of This Contract That OEC Will Execute?
The project provides for the implementation and adaptation of roads, including construction and redevelopment of cycle paths along the entire length, new roads with rigid and flexible pavement, new public lighting networks, and new vertical and horizontal signaling devices.

China has decided to tear down a giant water staircase at the largest dam on the planet, a project costing 11.4 billion dollars and taking over nine years to unlock the bottleneck of the Three Gorges and nearly double the load that goes up and down the Yangtze River.

Retired nuclear plants become billion-dollar dismantlings that resemble war surgery: each reactor can cost up to $2 billion, take 20 years to disappear, and leave tons of steel, concrete, and radioactive waste under strict technical control.
The Luiz Bom Tunnel will be executed using the NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method), a construction process where the tunnel is constructed in successive stages, using explosives or cold cutting with excavators. This method differs from the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), for example, because it adapts to changes in geology and geometry along the tunnel. In the case of the Campo Grande tunnel, the geology varies from sound rock (class I) to soil (class V), which justifies the choice of this methodology.
Metrics of This Project
The passage will have two galleries of approximately 600 meters in length each, with an average section of 90 square meters. Two blasting fronts will be opened, one from the north face and another from the south face, with a forecast of two blasts per day at each front. The total volume of blasts in rock will be approximately 100 thousand cubic meters.
The new trench will have a length of 420 meters, with a width of 13 meters. There will be 10 thousand square meters of supports executed, contained by more than 200 units of tiebacks.
The contractual deadline for the work is 24 months. It is budgeted at R$ 286 million, expected to start in March 2023, generating about 1,200 jobs both direct and indirect.
The Campo Grande Road Connection project will generate improvements in urban mobility for residents, not only of the neighborhood but of the entire West region that uses its roads. Campo Grande is the largest neighborhood in the West Zone of Rio, with approximately 330 thousand inhabitants.
Projects That OEC Has Already Earned and Completed in 2023
In January of this year, the government of the state of Rio de Janeiro greenlit OEC for the construction of the water production system in a municipality in Baixada Fluminense.
In February, the construction company also managed to complete the tests at the Santa Cruz Thermal Power Plant in RJ, along with Tenenge, a subsidiary of the company.
