The Enormous Ship ONE Apus, Coordinated by ONE and NYK, Was a Victim of an Incident Caused by a Storm in the Pacific Ocean, on the Route Between the United States and China, on November 30 More Than a Thousand Containers Fell Into the Sea.

Due to the storm, with high waves and very strong winds, the cargo ship had its cargo thrown overboard, and so far, the companies have accounted for at least 1,816 containers at sea, of which 64 contain hazardous cargo.

As a result of the storm, in addition to the 1,816 containers that fell into the sea, there are hundreds of other containers on the ship that are damaged, with their contents partially or totally damaged, resulting in a drastic loss.

This is considered so far the second-largest accident involving container ships since the sinking of the MOL Comfort in 2013, when the ship broke in half. In this incident, over 4,300 containers were lost.

Ship Faces Storm Close to Northwest Hawaii

The ship was en route from Yantian, China to Long Beach, USA, approximately 1600 NM northwest of Hawaii, when it encountered a violent storm, producing very strong winds and very high waves, which caused the ONE Apus to roll severely, resulting in the displacement of the lost and damaged containers.

Notification was sent to JRCC in Honolulu and Guam with maritime navigation warnings subsequently transmitted. The initial investigations aboard the ONE Apus determined that the impacted container compartments remained unsafe for close inspections.
