The State Company Could Reduce Gasoline Price by R$ 0.16 Per Liter and Diesel by R$ 0.19 Per Liter, The Agency Pointed Out to Achieve International Parity.

In recent days, the price of oil in the international market fell to around US$ 70 per barrel, while the prices of derivatives at Petrobras’ refineries in the domestic market remained stable for almost a month. Due to this situation, the Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers (Abicom) believes that the opportunities for importation are favorable.

According to Abicom, the gasoline at Brazilian refineries is on average 8% more expensive compared to the international market, while diesel shows a 4% increase. In Bahia, where the only relevant private refinery, the Mataripe Refinery, is located, the price difference reaches 15% for gasoline and a 1% discount for diesel compared to the international market.

At Petrobras refineries, gasoline is 6% more expensive than abroad, and diesel is 5%. According to Abicom, to achieve international parity, the state company could reduce gasoline prices by R$ 0.16 per liter and diesel by R$ 0.19 per liter.

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, argued that Petrobras should reduce fuel prices to help decrease the inflationary impact in the country and allow the Central Bank (BC) to lower interest rates to stimulate the economy. He suggests that the price reduction could vary between R$ 0.32 and R$ 0.42 for diesel, and between R$ 0.10 and R$ 0.12 for gasoline.
