In Nova Resende, in the south of Minas, José Carlos transforms ordinary motorcycles into a custom agricultural tricycle, with a 200cc engine and hundreds of modifications. For producers like Edson, the machine conquers the coffee on slopes where the tractor cannot enter, but it is a solution designed for the small producer.

A Brazilian inventor converts an ordinary motorcycle into an agricultural tricycle with a sprayer, dump body, and even a mobile workshop with a generator, exchanging speed for strength to serve the small rural producer who cannot afford a tractor. Released in June by JC Tríciclos Agrícolas, the invention is by José Carlos, known as Zé, who adapted the motorcycle to tackle farm work, where, according to him, having three wheels in the field only brings advantages.

The setting is the coffee mountains of southern Minas, where farm paths have remained the same for centuries. In Nova Resende, the same motorcycle that takes producer Edson from home enters the fields and gets the job done. According to him, a tractor would be expensive to maintain his 2 hectares and would not pass through the narrow and rugged terrains, while the agricultural tricycle navigates well and, instead of speed, offers the necessary strength for heavy work.

For the small producer, the cost with a tractor does not add up. In the coffee plantations of Nova Resende, José Carlos created the agricultural tricycle from an ordinary motorcycle, and for those managing a small area like Edson’s 2 hectares, maintaining a tractor would be too expensive and impractical on narrow slopes. The three-wheeled machine, on the other hand, moves well and handles the routine.

It is on the sloped coffee farm that the difference appears. According to Edson, on a steep farm, the tractor cannot go uphill, especially when loaded, and ends up crushing and damaging the coffee with its wheels, while the adapted motorcycle does the job without this damage. Therefore, in the producer’s opinion, every small property should have equipment like this, which adapts to the region’s geography.

A modified motorcycle that brakes and turns like a tractor

Despite its appearance, it does not drive like a common motorcycle. The agricultural tricycle is, in practice, a motorcycle modified for the field, with hitches and controls not seen in other machines, and making a turn is like guiding a horse by the reins, using hand and foot. It features a two-brake pedal system that also locks one of the wheels to help turn, the same principle as a tractor.

The transformation starts with a simple base. The motorcycle arrives with two wheels and a 200cc engine, and from there, hundreds of changes are made to the chassis. The original version is a leisure vehicle, with little power and high speed, but in the agricultural tricycle, the speed decreases and the power becomes that of a tractor, so the equipment is no longer made for the road.

Sprayer, dump body, and mobile workshop with generator

The great idea lies in the attachments that fit the base. The agricultural tricycle functions as a standard attachment platform, on which the producer chooses different equipment. Options include the sprayer, with tanks of various sizes, and the dump trailer, which, according to the inventor, one person can tip over without help.

The most complete model is a workshop on wheels. The workshop tricycle features a tool drawer, vise, hydraulic jack, a water tank, and a hose about 25 meters long, and it even vulcanizes tires and welds, thanks to an onboard power generator, allowing problems to be solved without leaving the property. The body uses a single type of wood, a treated purpleheart so hard that, according to him, it cracks when receiving a nail and only yields to a drill.

From a coffee rake to word of mouth, the inventor’s story

The idea was born in the middle of the countryside. It all started with the thought of small producers who couldn’t afford a tractor, and the great insight was realizing that what has two wheels could have three and do the job of a four-wheeled machine, with advantages. His first invention was a rake to turn coffee on the patio, installed on a motorcycle he had at home, operated by just one person.

Success came by word of mouth, before the internet. According to the inventor, that year the work paid off, and those who saw it asked for one just like it, starting with his uncle and friends, until the demand reached far, at a time when the internet was still being created. From spending 15 days to assemble one unit and searching for scrap metal, he reached an agricultural tricycle factory that today almost runs itself, and he claims new inventions should come out later this year.

In Nova Resende, in the south of Minas, José Carlos transforms common motorcycles into a custom-made agricultural tricycle, mounted on a 200cc base with hundreds of modifications and attachments that fit, like a sprayer, dump body, and even a mobile workshop with a generator. Trading speed for the power of a tractor, the machine serves small coffee producers like Edson, who work on steep and narrow terrains where a tractor is impractical.

Born from a coffee rake and spread by word of mouth, the invention is an ingenious and low-cost solution for family farming, although designed for small producers and specific terrains, and not as a universal replacement for the tractor.

And you, do you think an agricultural tricycle like this would help small producers in your region, or do you prefer to rely on traditional machines? Share your opinion and exchange ideas with other readers about Brazilian field inventions, with respect for different views.
