WEG will be responsible for supplying a pair of ring motors of 9,000 KW at 1,000 rpm and two other motors of 7,500 KW also at 1,000 rpm, all designed to be interchangeable with the old existing motors, providing a seamless replacement.
The motors were applied, in pairs, to huge SAG and ball mills that operate through double pinion drive, summing their power to each mill.

The WEG team evaluated several options to offer a more reliable product, and the final design was approved after the client’s inspection at WEG’s headquarters in Brazil and a technical visit to a copper mine in Chile where similar WEG motors are operating successfully.
According to the company, an important factor for this project was the local WEG specialists in the market, providing a quick response to the client and listening carefully to their needs.
WEG Ring Motors for Mining
WEG ring motors for mining were designed to allow for another important technical factor for this project, where they can operate both as a ring motor and as an induction motor powered by a frequency inverter when the temperature is very low (-50 °C), and the ore inside the mills freezes, allowing the mills’ speed to be controlled automatically.
Due to health restrictions, the electric motors were delivered in July 2020. The commissioning was postponed to December, and the work was carried out from November 15 to December 23, 2020.
