R$ 2.6 Billion Lava Jato Fund Will Go to the Amazon and Education. The Money Was Agreed Between Petrobras and the U.S. Department of Justice.
The presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, the Attorney General of the National Treasury, José Levi, the PGR, Raquel Dodge, and the AGU, André Mendonça, signed an agreement that allows the allocation of R$ 1 billion from Petrobras’ fund to combat deforestation and fires in the Amazon on Thursday, September 5. On the last day 23, the state-owned company was summoned to save the Amazon.
Then, it was the turn of the PGR, which sent a statement to the Supreme Court requesting that part of the resources paid by Petrobras due to an agreement made with the United States be allocated to fighting the fires in the Amazon.

The agreement signed yesterday, 05, will be submitted for approval by Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the STF, who mediated meetings on the allocation of the funds and is the rapporteur for the action discussing it in the Court. The amount of R$ 1 billion includes a transfer of R$ 430 million for joint actions with the states in the region.
In addition to the funds for the Amazon, the term also provides for the allocation of R$ 1.6 billion for education.
According to the AGU, the use of the funds will be monitored by the TCU and the CGU. It will be the Union’s responsibility to prepare a report for Petrobras on the resources received and their effective application.
“This is an important moment, where resources will finally be allocated to public interest actions in crucial areas to promote citizenship in Brazil and the defense of the Amazon, a Brazilian heritage that is also very important. The agreement allows the funds to be immediately made available to the Federal government”, stated Raquel Dodge upon signing the agreement.
The Attorney General of the Union, André Mendonça, celebrated the signing of the term and stated that the signing allows for a “fair, correct, and public-interest satisfying” allocation of the funds.
