Multinational Amazon Announces Construction of a New Solar Power Plant in Brazil That Promises to Generate More Than 800 Jobs.
This Wednesday (21), the multinational Amazon announced that it will invest in renewable energy to add 2.7 GW in production capacity through dozens of new projects around the world, including a solar plant in Brazil, promising to generate 850 new jobs.
Amazon Plans to Generate 50 Thousand GWh of Renewable Energy
The announcement of 71 new projects in the renewable energy sector, now totaling 379, comes with a focus on Amazon’s goal to use only clean energy in its operations by 2025.
Amazon plans to generate 50 thousand Gigawatt-hours of clean energy across its entire portfolio. This energy is enough to power 4.6 million homes in North America for a year.

While hydroelectric plants lose capacity due to evaporation caused by heat in the reservoirs, the Philippines are installing floating solar panels on the plants’ own lakes, generating energy, reducing evaporation by up to 70%, and cooling the panels to increase electrical efficiency at the same time.

Small and flexible hydropower plants can be a game-changer for clean energy by generating electricity in previously overlooked rivers, without requiring large dams or aggressively altering the water flow.

Dongfang breaks world record and manufactures 26 MW wind turbine in China with 137-meter blades that spin so slowly they appear stationary on the horizon.
The new projects include, for example, three large-scale solar power plants in the Indian state of Rajasthan, with a capacity of 420 MW, solar rooftop projects in France and Austria, and its first solar power plant in Poland.
Amazon’s Solar Plant Promises to Generate 850 Jobs in Brazil
In addition to these projects, the multinational Amazon announced its first renewable energy project in South America, a 122 MW solar energy farm.
The estimate is that the company will create 850 jobs in Brazil during the construction phase of the solar plant, with 30 more permanent jobs during the operation phase of the solar energy farm.
The multinational also stated that the project will receive investments of R$ 2 million in environmental programs during the construction of the solar plant, focusing on promoting biodiversity. Nevertheless, the Amazon did not disclose the location of the plant in its announcement.
Growth of the Solar Energy Market in Brazil
According to data from August 2022, solar energy in Brazil has an installed capacity of 17 GW. Last year, the country ranked 14th in the world in terms of installed solar power, with 13 GW, and was the 11th country that generated the most solar energy.
Brazil receives an insolation, that is, the number of hours of sunlight, of over 3,000 hours per year, with the Northeast region having an average incidence of between 4.5 to 6 kWh. It is the country with the highest solar irradiation rate in the world.
