Anglo American’s New Bet for the Mining Sector Is the Replacement of Its Current Fleet with the New Hydrogen Fuel Technology Truck to Reduce Pollutant Gas Emissions in the Atmosphere During Use

On Friday, May 6th, Anglo American unveiled its latest innovation for its production plants in the mining sector worldwide, the sustainable truck. The vehicle features hydrogen fuel technology and could significantly minimize carbon emissions in the atmosphere, thus ensuring a much more efficient environmental commitment within the company’s production chain in Brazil and around the world.

Hydrogen Fuel Technology Truck Is Anglo American’s New Bet for Replacing Its Fleet in the Mining Sector

The search for increasingly sustainable alternatives in the production chains of various sectors is more present globally, and now, Anglo American has launched its newest project for this initiative. The company revealed its hydrogen fuel technology truck for reducing emissions in the atmosphere. Furthermore, the vehicle will have the capacity to transport up to 290 tons and is part of the company’s zero-emission nuGen transport solution announced in recent years.

The company also stated that over the next few years, it intends to replace its entire fleet of 40 vehicles with the newly presented truck. This way, it will ensure that operations in the mining sector can become increasingly sustainable, as there will be a minimization of carbon emissions through the use of hydrogen for fueling the fleet. The vehicles currently in use consume about one million liters of diesel annually, which negatively contributes to environmental impacts.

Thus, Duncan Wanblad, CEO of Anglo American, commented on the company’s plan to neutralize carbon emissions in the atmosphere by 2030. The executive stated that this initiative is essential to the plan and emphasized: “In the coming years, we expect to convert or replace our current diesel-powered truck fleet with this zero-emission transport system fueled by green hydrogen. If this pilot is successful, we could eliminate up to 80% of diesel emissions at our open-pit mines.”

Miner Looks to Advance Sustainability by Replacing Its Fleet of Vehicles in Mining with the New Hydrogen Fuel Truck

The mining sector is still the biggest contributor to current environmental issues within the national territory, and Anglo American is gradually working to change this scenario. Thus, the truck will feature cutting-edge technology consisting of a hybrid hydrogen fuel cell providing approximately half its energy, with a battery supplying the other half, to enable energy recovery during braking.

With this, hydrogen will be able to react chemically with other substances and ensure the necessary fuel for operations in the mining sector. Moreover, this truck’s technology will also have a significant impact on the company’s operations. This is because the 290-ton load capacity will be essential for Anglo American to ensure greater efficiency in the transportation and handling of loads.

Now, the company states that it will focus its efforts on replacing its entire fleet with the new truck by 2030 and hopes to achieve carbon neutrality in pollutant gas emissions by the end of the established deadline.
