Enrollment for the Libras Course
According to the State Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (SEDPcD), the basic Libras course was designed for individuals aged 18 and over who wish to acquire knowledge about the language and deaf culture.
Enrollment will open next Monday (03) and will continue until all spots are filled.
This initiative aims to cater to those interested in enhancing their communication skills as well as professionals who work with the deaf public, increasing accessibility in various areas.
Online Modality and Course Load
The course, which takes place entirely online, offers 40 hours of learning, of which 30 hours are live classes conducted via the Zoom platform, while the remaining 10 hours are dedicated to complementary activities and content reinforcement.
The classes will be distributed across 16 different groups, with scheduling options on various days: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; Tuesdays and Thursdays; and Saturdays, providing flexibility for those with other commitments.
To participate, it is necessary to have internet access and a camera to follow the live classes, as interaction and practice are essential for learning.
At the end of the course, participants who achieve a minimum attendance of 75% in live classes and a final average of at least 5.0 will receive a certificate of completion.
Topics Covered in the Course
The course topics cover a wide range of essential subjects for those starting in the world of Libras. Students will be exposed to topics such as:
- Introduction to Libras and its importance;
- Deaf identity and culture;
- Differences in communication between deaf and hearing individuals;
- Regionalisms and variations in Libras;
- Manual alphabet and personal signs;
- Expressions of greeting and weather conditions;
- Basic vocabulary about time, numbers, and feelings;
- Notions of family, professions, documents, and facial expressions;
- Verbs and hand configurations used in the language.
This set of topics ensures that students have a basic and practical understanding of Libras, facilitating a more inclusive and respectful communication.
Classes with Deaf Teachers
One of the highlights of the course is that classes are conducted by deaf teachers, providing a more authentic experience of deaf culture and an opportunity to learn directly from those who use Libras as their primary language.
This interaction allows students to practice directly with those immersed in the language, making the learning process more dynamic and engaging.
The Importance of Libras for Inclusion
According to official data, the state of São Paulo is home to over 590,000 deaf individuals, and knowledge of Libras is becoming increasingly necessary in an inclusive context.
By learning Libras, hearing individuals expand their communication possibilities and create a more accessible environment, whether at work, in daily life, or in educational settings.
According to SEDPcD, this initiative aims not only to expand knowledge about sign language but also to strengthen a society that values diversity.
