Initial Estimate of Oil Spill Quantity in Campos Basin Increased After Aerial Inspections in The Area Where The Vessel Is Located
According to Click Petroleum and Gas, reported yesterday, August 26, the FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, owned by Modec, had its hull cracked, causing a spill of 1,200 liters in the Campos Basin and the evacuation of about 100 workers from the vessel.
After a new flyover in the area where the FPSO is anchored, Petrobras released new information about the oil spill situation in the sea.
According to the Brazilian state-owned company, the estimate of the quantity of oil spilled in the sea has increased to 6,600 liters, in addition to the 1,200 liters that have already been collected by containment teams.
Petrobras informed that besides the helicopter conducting flyovers in the Campos Basin, there are also seven vessels for collecting and dispersing the material operating in the location and four support vessels.

Another alarming piece of information reported, this time by Modec, the owner of the FPSO, was the increase in the extent of the cracks. Despite this, the vessel remains in a stable position, in safe conditions, and is under 24-hour monitoring.
Decommissioning
The FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro has been out of operation since July 2018 and is in the process of leaving the Espadarte field, 130 kilometers off the coast.
The unit, owned by Modec, is contracted by Petrobras and is part of a set of seven platforms that the oil company plans to deactivate in the short term.
The FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro is part of a group of three FPSOs installed in deep waters, alongside the P-33 (Marlim) and the Piranema platform (Sergipe), which Petrobras intends to decommission in 2019 and 2020.
In addition, Petrobras plans to decommission three semi-submersibles installed in shallow Campos waters (P-7, P-12, and P-15).
