The New Increase in the Tariff Flag of the Brazilian Electricity Bill is Scheduled to Take Effect in September
In yet another year of shock from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Brazilian population has faced various situations that “weigh” on their wallets, and this includes mainly the electricity bill. Unfortunately, the latest news is that the tariff flag will increase by about 58%, meaning it will rise from R$ 9.49 to a value between R$ 14.00 and R$ 15.00. Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency) will confirm the exact value on the next day, 31 (Tuesday).

Discussion of Tariff Adjustment Values
Since July, Brazilians have already been paying the electricity bill with a significant adjustment in the tariff flag, of about 50%. However, there has been a surge in the cost of electricity, necessitating a new adjustment in the tariff flag value. With so many issues to face, it certainly wasn’t in any Brazilian’s plans to pay even more on their electricity bill.
The adjustment will apply to the highest level of the tariff flag: the red flag 2. Below it are the yellow and green flags. For every 100 kWh consumed, the new adjustment fee will be charged, resulting in an absurd increase in the value of your electricity bill.

The discussion regarding the increase of the tariff flag took place through a meeting with various representatives of the government. Initially, the idea of the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, was to raise the tariff to R$ 24.00. But the Ministry of Economy intervened and stipulated that it should be between R$ 14.00 and R$ 15.00, a value that will be charged for about six months. Aneel, in turn, defended that the adjustment value on the electricity bill should be R$ 19.00, charged for only three months.
Forecast of More Adjustments on Electricity Bills Until the End of the Year
Created in 2015 by Aneel, the tariff flag serves to inform customers of the cost of generating electricity for their homes. This system primarily helps customers identify if they are consuming more than usual. The electricity bill details their consumption throughout the month.
This information is also available on your state’s energy company website. There is a high probability of more adjustments until the end of this year, as the water crisis is severely affecting the country. The low levels in water reservoirs are concerning, and urgent measures need to be taken – in addition to the adjustment in the electricity bill.
It is estimated that there will be a new change in the tariff flag still in September, going from R$ 14.20 to R$ 24.00. It remains for Brazilians to wait for the official announcement from the Ministry of Mines and Energy and Aneel, defining the real value of the adjustment on electricity bills. The increase in the tariff flag will take effect on September 1st throughout the country.
