Four Dams Will Be Built in Sumé, Uiraúna, Pombal, and Catingueira with Different Capacities and Construction Planned to Start in 2026.

The governor of Paraíba, João Azevêdo (PSB), announced this Monday (14) the publication of the bidding notice for the construction of four new dams in the interior of the state.

The works are part of the Paraíba 2025/2026 program and represent an investment of R$ 177 million.

Four Cities Will Benefit

The dams will be built in Sumé, Uiraúna, Pombal, and Catingueira.

Each structure will have a different capacity, adapted to the needs of each region.

The goal is to ensure greater water security and regular water supply for the population.

Details of the Announced Works

During the program Talk with the Governor, broadcast by Rádio Tabajara FM, Azevêdo stated that the bidding notice will be launched this week for hiring the companies responsible for the constructions. The storage capacities were disclosed:

  • Formigueiro (Sumé): 8 million m³;
  • Olho d’Água Seco (Uiraúna): 2.5 million m³;
  • Estrelo (Pombal): 4.4 million m³;
  • Catingueira: 38 million m³.

According to the governor, the works were announced back in January and are another stage of the planning presented for the last two years of management.

Works Should Start in 2026

The bidding processes should take place in the coming months. The expectation is that the works will begin in the first half of 2026.

Azevêdo emphasized that the dams will reduce the impacts of drought and improve the quality of life for the population in the semi-arid region of Paraíba.

These are dams that will improve the water security of the State,” concluded the governor.
