The Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, stated that China is an indispensable partner for Brazil. It is the largest trade and scientific cooperation partner. The two countries intend to discuss technological cooperation for the production of Earth observation satellites during Lula’s visit to Beijing.
In this way, Mauro Vieira is already preparing the topics that will be addressed during this visit, which will take place in March. The bilateral trade between Brazil and China already amounts to US$ 150 billion, with a surplus for Brazil of US$ 28 billion. However, other priorities stand out in this partnership: economy, science and technology, education, and research.
Another subject raised by the Brazilian diplomatic leadership is the reform of the United Nations Security Council, new trade agreements, and a new global governance. Brazil already has nearly 40 years of experience in space research programs and the construction of Earth observation satellites, which need to be adapted to current needs.
Thus, these solutions are also used for climate monitoring, land systematization and use, water resource management, and image production for environmental licensing. The expectation of the head of Brazilian diplomacy is that this trip opens great possibilities for bilateral relations between the two countries.

The rural caucus is advancing in Congress to try to block the use of Ibama satellites in remote embargoes, targeting a system that identifies illegal deforestation in real time and jeopardizing one of the most efficient tools used by the government to block devastated areas in the Amazon, prevent access to rural credit, halt deals with meatpackers, and curb the advance of environmental destruction across thousands of hectares.
It is important to consider that the decisions made in these relations will be evaluated individually and without the automatic ideological alignments that existed in the past. Vieira also emphasizes that protecting the interests of Brazilians abroad is one of the main objectives of Itamaraty. In this sense, the reopening of the Brazilian embassy in Venezuela and the consulates in the neighboring country was necessary.
Therefore, people would no longer be left abandoned in foreign territory without any necessary documents. The Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, met with the columnist to discuss recent political events. The Brazilian government reported that the embassy in Israel will remain in Tel Aviv, as recognized by most countries.
Jair Bolsonaro had mentioned the possibility of transferring the diplomatic representation to Jerusalem, which is a city at the center of disputes between Palestinians and Israelis.
However, this measure was met with resistance from Islamic countries, which are the main buyers of Brazilian agricultural products. According to Vieira, Brazil is also considering leaving the Family Partnership initiative, as it seeks to promote an international far-right agenda.
Some of these policies are incompatible with Brazilian legislation and do not bring benefits to the country. He also explained that Brazil is in the process of reviewing the decisions made by former President Jair Bolsonaro, such as relinquishing its status as a developing country in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The chancellor stated that any decision that is beneficial to national interests will be made.
Vieira also mentioned the possibility of advocating for Argentina’s entry into Brics, a bloc currently composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. He stated that after some internal consultation and consensus among the members, Brazil has no objection to the expansion of the bloc.
Regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine, Vieira declared that Brazil is not taking sides in the dispute and is simply seeking neutrality on the matter. He hopes to offer good offices should the parties wish to converse to find a way to negotiate peacefully. The position will be conveyed to Sergey Lavrov during the Russian minister’s upcoming visits to Brazil in April.
