New Partnerships Signed in Abuja Aim to Boost Energy Transition, Food Security, and Neoindustrialization in the Global South.
The Brazil has made new and important agreements with Nigeria in the fields of energy and agriculture. The signing took place on Tuesday (3/24), in Abuja, during the 2nd Session of the Brazil-Nigeria Strategic Dialogue Mechanism. The initiative, led by Vice President and Minister Geraldo Alckmin, marks the resumption of the main bilateral forum after more than a decade and focuses on topics such as energy transition and fertilizers.
Resumption of Strategic Dialogue Boosts Bilateral Cooperation
The main forum for discussions between the two countries was successfully resumed. The meeting took place after more than ten years of hiatus. The commitments were signed by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who led the Brazilian mission in the African nation. During the two days of the visit, Alckmin had meetings with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Focus on Renewable Sources and Sustainable Transition
A memorandum was signed in the energy sector. The document provides for the expansion of partnerships in fossil sources as well as in renewable sources. According to the ministry, the main goal is to deepen bilateral cooperation. The measure is fully aligned with Brazil‘s commitments to energy transition and sustainable development.

Brazilian Technology for Nigerian Food Security
The agricultural sector also registered important advances. Brazil will provide machinery and technology to modernize Nigerian agriculture. This initiative is part of the program “The Green Imperative.” According to Alckmin, cooperation helps to increase Nigeria’s food security. It also paves the way for greater exchange in the fertilizer and inputs sector. Currently, 48% of what Brazil imports from Nigeria is fertilizers and chemical inputs.
Strengthening the South-South Axis with Trade and Investments
The rapprochement with Nigeria strengthens Brazil‘s ties with Global South Nations. These countries are considered strategic for Brazil’s new neoindustrialization policy. Both nations have shown great interest in diversifying trade exchanges and increasing bilateral investments. Alckmin highlighted the importance of creating a “productive, technological, and human South-South Atlantic axis.”
COP30 in Brazil and Business Forum on the Radar
The Brazilian vice president took the opportunity to invite Nigeria to COP30. The climate conference will be held in Belém (PA) in 2025. According to him, the event will be an excellent opportunity to broaden joint commitments on sustainability. The mission’s agenda also includes holding the Brazil-Nigeria Business Forum, which aims to connect entrepreneurs from both countries.
