Since the Discovery of Large Oil Reserves in the Pre-Salt, Brazil Has Become One of the World’s Leading Oil Producers.
But do you know how the oil exploration began in the country and how Brazil manages to produce more oil in less time? In this article, we will answer these questions and provide other important information about oil production in Brazil.
History of Oil Exploration in Brazil
The history of commercial oil exploration in Brazil began in the 1950s, with the creation of Petrobras, the Brazilian state oil company. Since then, the company has established itself as a leader in deep and ultra-deep water oil exploration.
However, it was only in 2006 that pre-salt oil, the layer of oil below the seabed at depths of over 2,000 meters, began to be discovered, propelling Brazilian production to new heights.
-
There is oil below the oil that Brazil already extracts: Petrobras confirmed a new accumulation in the Búzios field, at a depth of 5,600 meters, in a zone below the reservoir already operating in the Santos Basin.
-
404 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, an oil company drilled 5,855 meters into the ocean and discovered the largest oil and gas reserve found in a quarter of a century.
-
Vaca Muerta can supply gas to Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Argentina for up to 124 years, but it requires more than $10 billion in infrastructure to distribute the gas.
-
Criminals dig a secret tunnel to tap into Petrobras pipeline, steal 100,000 liters of fuel and put thousands of people at risk of explosion in the Federal District.
How Does Brazil Produce More Oil in Less Time?
The expansion of oil production in Brazil occurred thanks to significant technological advancements. The exploration of pre-salt oil required high-tech equipment and the implementation of advanced drilling techniques, such as the use of directional drilling. This allowed Brazilians to extract oil at depths never explored before.
Advanced drilling equipment, such as the drilling rig, enables the extraction of oil more quickly and efficiently. Furthermore, real-time data processing, made possible by technology, allows teams to add tools to ensure productivity and anticipate equipment problems.
Currently, Brazil also encourages foreign companies to invest in the exploration of new oil wells in the country through auctions that offer exploration contracts. This facilitates the entry of new technologies and investments, as well as increasing oil production in the country.
How Many Barrels of Oil Has Brazil Produced?
According to data from ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels), in December 2022, total production was 3.955 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), of which 3.074 million bbl/d was oil and 140.14 million m³/d was natural gas.
Since the discovery of the pre-salt, Brazilian oil production has increased significantly. While in 2010 the production was about 2.1 million barrels per day, by 2019 it reached an average of 3 million barrels per day. This growth places Brazil among the top 10 oil producers in the world.
