Swiss Engineer Launches Case That Updates Old iPhones to USB-C Without Opening the Device; Product Is Already For Sale Online
Ken Pillonel, a Swiss engineer known for modifying an iPhone in 2021 to include a USB-C port, has launched a new accessory. This time, the product is commercial and allows iPhones with a Lightning port to be updated to the USB-C standard, without the need for internal modifications.
Adaptation Without Opening the Phone
The accessory functions as a case that fits around the iPhone. When connected, it enables fast charging of 9V, data transfer, and use of Apple CarPlay.
The project particularly serves users of older Apple models that still utilize the Lightning port.

An appliance that many people leave on during summer nights can consume up to 634 kWh per month, add more than R$ 560 to the electricity bill, and still incur higher costs due to incorrect temperature settings and a dirty filter, technicians warn.
The proposal aims to allow these devices to become compatible with the latest standard adopted by Apple in current models.
Without needing to open the device or replace parts, consumers gain a more accessible option.
Focus on Durability and Sustainability
According to Pillonel, the main motivation for the product is to combat planned obsolescence. By extending the lifespan of devices, the engineer hopes to contribute to a more sustainable alternative to electronic consumption.
The accessory is also compatible with MagSafe charging and features a magnetic lock that securely holds the adapter in place without the need for tools.
Extra Features for Practicality
In addition to its main function of converting to USB-C, the case offers other features. It includes an extra compartment for a SIM card, designed for frequent travelers.
It also has an integrated strap for easier transportation of the device.
Not all exclusive functions of the Lightning port are compatible with the accessory. In those cases, simply removing the case allows the use of specific accessories.
Continuity in Brand Accessories
Ken Pillonel had previously developed similar solutions for AirPods and AirPods Max. These adapters allow the replacement of the Lightning port with USB-C, facilitating the use of universal chargers across Apple devices.
Now, with the release of the iPhone case, the proposal expands. Users gain a practical option to keep their devices updated with current standards.
Available Online With New Colors Soon
The accessory is available in the online store Obsoless, with prices ranging between 45 and 55 Swiss francs. The initial version is dark gray, but new colors will be launched starting in September.
