During The Epagri Event, The Onion Capital Shows Advances In Hybrid Cultivars, Sustainability And Smart Irrigation, Reinforcing The National Leadership Of Ituporanga In Agricultural Production
The onion capital, Ituporanga, in Santa Catarina, will be the stage for one of the most anticipated events in the agricultural sector, according to a report published.
Next Wednesday, October 8, the Epagri Experimental Station (EEITU) promotes the Field Day, officially marking the opening of the onion harvest.
The meeting starts at 8 AM and is expected to gather around 300 people, including farmers, technicians, agronomy students, and representatives from technical schools.

Raising tilapia, the most farmed fish in Brazil, with solar-powered tanks is a trend gaining strength in the field because the panels ensure water oxygenation in places without electricity and reduce costs, although profitability depends on management, feed, and market.
-
Now Brazil has moved up a level: flying robots are starting to be tested to harvest oranges on farms, selecting ripe fruits with cameras and sensors, sucking each fruit without dropping it, and promising to help producers in the face of labor shortages in orchards.
-
New Fiat EV, priced at R$ 77,000, will bring a reinterpretation of the 147 and a consumption equivalent to 70 km/l.

Stamping on pork may seem strange, but it reveals an important detail about food safety that many people overlook at the butcher shop.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 AM and will feature the presence of authorities and entities linked to agriculture in Santa Catarina.
Registration is free and can be done by phone at (47) 3533-8818, with Adriana, or via QR Code provided by the organization.
The event consolidates the importance of the Ituporanga region, which accounts for 440,000 tons of the 556,484 tons produced in the State for the 2024/25 harvest, according to data from Epagri/Cepa.
The expectation is that production will reach 476,000 tons in the next harvest, reaffirming the city’s leading role in the national scenario.
Hybrid Cultivars And Open Pollination Strengthen Productivity In The Onion Capital
Among the highlights of the Field Day, Epagri will showcase its OP (open pollination) cultivars and hybrid onions, resulting from years of research conducted by the technical team at EEITU.
The station manager, Gerson Wamser, explains that ten cultivars adapted to local climate and soil conditions have already been launched, and two hybrids are currently under evaluation.
The open pollination cultivars remain the preferred choice for farmers due to their resistance and regional adaptation, while the hybrids stand out for the uniformity of bulbs and plants.
This genetic diversification reinforces the competitiveness of the onion capital and encourages sustainable and efficient production practices, in line with modern agriculture trends.
Pest Management And Disease Control Mark The New Phase Of Sustainable Production
During the technical tour, participants will have access to practical information on pest and disease management, including control of the root fly, responsible for significant losses in recent harvests.
Results on fertilization, with different types of fertilizers and application times, as well as studies focused on Stemphylium and bacterial diseases, the main challenges of the crop, will also be presented.
The event reinforces Epagri’s commitment to science-based agriculture, combining productivity and environmental respect.
Another highlight is the encouragement of organic onion production, which has been growing in the region and gaining space in local and national markets, adding value to the brand “onion capital”.
Smart Irrigation And Rural Credit Increase Producer Competitiveness
The onion capital also positions itself as a technological showcase. Partner companies will present modern irrigation systems, agricultural implements, and rural credit solutions, essential for sustaining productive advancement.
These resources allow for optimized water use, reduced costs, and increased efficiency in the field.
According to the Agro Observatory of Santa Catarina, Santa Catarina is the national leader in onion production, with 19,516 hectares planted. For the 2025/26 harvest, the estimate is 594,000 tons, a growth of 5.7% compared to the previous one.
The average productivity is expected to rise from 28,841 kg/hectare to 30,476 kg/hectare, driven by technology and a 1.2% increase in planted area.
These indicators confirm that innovation applied in the event is an essential part of consolidating Santa Catarina’s leadership.
