California Company Launches Innovative Electric Car With Solar Panels, Offering Impressive Range Of 1,600 Km Without Recharging.

Seventeen years after its initial announcement, the revolutionary electric car from Aptera, which does not require charging, is about to be produced on an industrial scale. The first batch, consisting of 2,000 units of the Aptera Launch Edition, has already been secured by reservations, ensuring mass production of the model after a period marked by uncertainties.

Electric Car That Does Not Need To Be Recharged Has 1,600 Km Of Range

Founded in California (USA) in 2007, the startup managed to present its electric car prototype two years later, in 2009. However, successive delays drained the company’s resources, leading it to close its doors in 2011.

Subsequently, the project was purchased by the Chinese group Zhejiang Jonway. However, it went nowhere. In 2019, the original co-founders regained control of Aptera and seemingly managed to move the business forward with a focus on the production of their electric car that does not need to be recharged.

The project has evolved significantly. The first prototype promised a choice between hybrid and electric mechanics. The first hybrid car would have up to 480 km of range, while the electric one would have 190 km.

Currently, they have focused on electric mechanics aided by 180 photovoltaic cells integrated into the body. Suppliers of electric motors, batteries, and photovoltaic cells for the electric car that does not need to be recharged have already been selected, and the promise is a range of 1,600 km, with one day in the sun providing an additional 72 km of range.

Aptera proposes that its electric car will never need to be charged. Using it sparingly, of course. For the limited launch series, however, the electric model will have its ultralight body wrapped with solar cells totaling 700 W, one motor for each wheel, and a range close to 700 km.

New Electric Car Has Already Received Million-Dollar Investment

Each of the 2,000 electric cars available in the launch series was reserved after a payment of US$ 10,000, nearly R$ 50,000 in direct conversion. With this “investment,” the company raised over US$ 33 million, about R$ 165 million, which were added to a fund with over US$ 100 million (R$ 500 million) from investments over the last two years.

According to the company, all this funding will be used for the purchase of low-volume tools and the construction of the first vehicles intended for production by the company, which will be used for testing and validation.

The window for the launch edition of the Accelerator program has already closed; however, those still interested in investing in the brand’s vehicles can reserve a future production Aptera SEV for just R$ 500. With this reservation, it is possible to include customized options for the electric car that does not need to be recharged, such as interior/exterior colors, increased battery range, among other options.

Electric Car Market Grows In Brazil And Around The World

Sales of electric cars continue to expand in Brazil, and in October 2023, more than 2,300 vehicles in the category were sold. This figure represents a growth of 272% compared to the same period last year, when 636 units of electric cars were sold. Compared to the previous month, the increase is 29.5%.

According to ABVE, the best-selling model during this period was the BYD Dolphin, which had 1,366 units sold. The hatchback, launched in Brazil in July, leads with a good margin over the second place, the BYD Yuan Plus, which had 215 sales.
