To comply with the regulations, Wallace Wong chose shokupan, a Japanese milk bread known for its extremely soft texture and slightly sweet flavor.
According to him, the choice considered flavor. “I prefer it because it’s tasty. I’m a chef, so it has to be good,” he stated.
Slicing the Shokupan Required Millimetric Precision
According to the chef, slicing the bread was the most challenging part of the process. He made slow and repeated movements with the knife until achieving thin, uniform slices without holes or tears, ensuring the base of the world’s thinnest sandwich.
After preparing the bread, Wallace sliced tomatoes and cucumbers and assembled the sandwich with care and precision. The final measurement recorded 5.12 millimeters in thickness, securing the title of “thinnest sandwich ever sliced by hand” by the Guinness World Records.
