Rumors Indicate Serious Crisis at Chevrolet Brazil, with Production Halt, High Stocks, and Risk of Becoming an Importer, Following Ford’s Path.

A controversial topic is stirring the automotive sector. Is Chevrolet at serious risk in Brazil? Comments behind the scenes and on social media suggest a crisis is brewing. Some say that the giant may close its doors. Promises of multi-billion dollar investments seem to have remained just talk.

Comments indicate that Chevrolet is experiencing its worst crisis ever here in Brazil. Sales of the Onix and Tracker are reportedly in constant decline (according to data from FENABRAVE). There is a widespread concern about the future of the brand in the country, fueled by discussions on social media and behind closed doors.

High Stocks and Halted Production: The Situation in Chevrolet’s Factories

Official statement indicates that Chevrolet will halt production for 70 days

The stocks of Chevrolet are reportedly full. Many dealerships, according to reports, are struggling to sell the cars. Official statement indicates that Chevrolet will halt production of the ONIX for 70 days. The reason would be the inability to continue producing with such high stocks.

According to reports, the strategy would be to focus on imports, as is already happening in Colombia, where it closed its factory. The only local plans would be to restyle the Onix and Tracker. There would be no launch of a new platform or completely new model. This would be considered financially unfeasible by the automaker.

The Price Problem and the Current Market

The Brazilian automotive market would be sending a clear message: basic cars above R$ 100,000 do not sell anymore. There is a huge difficulty in selling compact SUVs in that price range. The restyled Chevrolet Onix and Tracker could end up costing over R$ 150,000 in their top versions.

The market would not accept these prices. Compact cars and compact sedans above R$ 80,000 would already have difficult sales. Even rental companies are reportedly refusing to buy these models in volume at high prices.

Following Ford? The Uncertain Future of Chevrolet in Brazil

The trend indicated is that Chevrolet will become just a car importer. This would be a path similar to that taken by Ford. Ford also went years without launching relevant new models before ending local production. Rumors suggest that many Chevrolet dealerships are already leaving the network and migrating to other brands. The strategy would focus on importing cars that generate more profit rather than manufacturing modern and affordable popular cars.

Past issues have affected Chevrolet‘s reputation. The case of the Onix catching fire is an example. Reports mention finish defects and problems with the engine and timing belt of the Onix and Tracker. The Tracker would suffer from poor depreciation, losing almost 20-30% in resale value. Selling cars above R$ 100,000 would be very difficult, with long waitlists for resale. This generates distrust and directly impacts the consumer.
