China Is Leading Advances in the Wind Energy Sector and Just Announced the Largest Onshore Wind Turbine in the World. This Gigantic Turbine Has the Capacity to Generate Enough Energy to Power Up to 160,000 Homes, Marking an Important Step in the Search for Sustainable and Renewable Solutions.

Sany Renewable Energy, a Chinese company, announced the construction of the largest onshore wind turbine in the world. The prototype, which can generate up to 15 MW, was installed this week in Jilin Province, in the northeast of the country. This article will provide you with everything you need to know about the new largest wind turbine in the world.

The Largest Wind Turbine in the World Can Generate Energy for 160,000 Homes in China

The largest onshore wind turbine, named SI-270150, has blades that are 131 meters long, covering an area equivalent to almost 11 football fields.

The Chinese turbine also features the largest rotor diameter for onshore turbines, measuring 270 meters, surpassing the previous turbine from Goldwind, which was 240 meters.

The blades were manufactured in Inner Mongolia and designed to be durable and recyclable. This largest onshore wind turbine can generate enough energy to power 160,000 homes annually and was designed to last 25 to 30 years, with a support system that ensures stability.

It is important to note that, although this largest wind turbine in the world has a lower capacity than the largest offshore wind turbine in the world, at 20 MW, offshore turbines can be larger due to less concern about visual and noise impact since they are far from cities. 

The prototype of the largest wind turbine in the world will undergo a year of testing to verify its reliability in an experimental wind farm, and only then will the structure be fully installed.

Meet the Largest Offshore Wind Turbine in the World

China is the global leader in wind energy, accounting for 65% of global capacity in 2023, and is home to four of the five largest turbine manufacturers, including Mingyang and Goldwind.

Currently, the Sany, the largest onshore wind turbine in the world, ranks seventh. Focusing on energy generated offshore, Mingyang Smart recently announced the installation of the largest single-capacity offshore wind turbine in Hainan, China.

According to the company, the structure offers a capacity of up to 20 MW, surpassing its previous model of 18 MW from 2023. The MySE18.X-20MW turbine was developed to be lightweight, modular, and highly reliable. With its giant wind rotor diameter of 260 to 292 meters, it has a maximum wind-swept area of 66,966 m², equivalent to more than 9 football fields.

According to Mingyang Smart Energy, with an average annual wind speed of 8.5 m/s, its new turbine can generate 80 million kWh of energy. That would be enough to power 96,000 traditional households per year.

Chinese Wind Energy Market Continues to Expand

The impressive expansion of China in building wind energy projects shows a firm commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources. However, to meet its ambitious goals for carbon emission reduction and maintain global leadership in renewable energy, China will need to continue investing in storage technologies and grid flexibility, as well as gradually reduce its dependence on coal.

The amount of wind and solar energy under construction in China is almost double that of the rest of the world combined, according to a report by Global Energy Monitor (GEM), an NGO that monitors energy projects.

The recently published research revealed that China has 180 gigawatts of utility-scale solar energy under construction and 159 GW of wind energy, totaling 339 GW of wind and solar energy under construction.
