A Major Leap Towards Sustainability: Bahia Positions Itself as a Global Pioneer in Innovative HBI, Sustainable Iron Production
Brazil Iron Mineração announces an ambitious US$ 5 billion project in Chapada Diamantina, placing Bahia at the forefront of hot briquetted iron (HBI) production. This product, essential for manufacturing “green steel”, promises to meet the growing global demand for sustainable solutions. The initiative includes the construction of a mine, a 120 km iron road, and a steel mill, positioning the region as one of the main innovation hubs in the mining industry.
Economic and Social Impact in Chapada Diamantina
The Vice President of International Relations at Brazil Iron, Emerson Souza, highlights the project’s importance not just for the sector but for the socioeconomic development of the region, covering the municipalities of Piatã, Abaíra, and Jussiape. With the prospect of generating over 55 thousand jobs and a tax revenue of R$ 47 billion for the state, the project promises to transform the local economy. At the same time, HBI production in Bahia will double from 5 million to 10 million tons annually, in a global market that produces about 20 million tons per year.
Sustainability and Innovation at the Core of the Project
The production of HBI in Bahia represents a significant advancement in the decarbonization of industry, utilizing technologies that allow for steel production in electric furnaces. This process not only prevents carbon emissions but also contributes to carbon sequestration, aligning with global sustainability goals. Henrique Carballal, president of CBPM, emphasizes that the project will be a landmark in global sustainability, countering false news about environmental impacts and promoting technological benefits for the state, according to the website atarde.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
During the event at the auditorium of the Federation of Industries of the State of Bahia (Fieb), it became clear that collaboration among Brazil Iron, CBPM, and Fieb will be crucial to prepare the Bahia industry for this new chapter. Carlos Henrique Passos, president of Fieb, reinforces that the project will decentralize the Bahia industrial park and attract new sustainable investments. The production of HBI is not only a technological advance but a commitment to the demands of society and the planet for green products.
With this innovative project, Bahia positions itself as a global leader in green iron production, promoting a more sustainable and economically prosperous future for the region and Brazil.
