The New Black Hawk UH-60L Helicopters Acquired by the Brazilian Air Force Combine Strength and Cutting-Edge Technology in a US$ 229 Million Deal That Also Symbolizes the Resumption of Diplomatic Ties Between Brasília and Washington.
The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) announced its intention to acquire 11 military Black Hawk helicopters, model UH-60L, from the United States government. The announcement comes a week before a possible meeting between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and American President Donald Trump.
Direct Negotiation Without Bidding
The FAB published, in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU), a notice of exemption from bidding for the purchase of the aircraft, a mechanism used when there is no possibility of commercial competition for the final object. The
estimated value of the operation is US$ 229 million — about R$ 1.2 billion at the current exchange rate — and will be carried out through the Blackhawk Exchange Sales Team (BEST) program, maintained by the United States Army.

The most feared warplane of the United States is over 70 years old, carries 32 tons of explosives, flies 14,000 kilometers nonstop, and has just been sent to the United Kingdom amid escalating tensions with Iran.
This program allows the U.S. Army to sell used military equipment and use the proceeds to fund new acquisitions.
Negotiations are limited to countries considered “strategic partners” and tend to occur at prices lower than those practiced in the international market.
Embedded Equipment and Technology
The Brazilian government has also advanced in the purchase of 24 BRIFD G5000H radars, used in Black Hawk aircraft.
These systems are responsible for mapping and target detection in combat and rescue missions, enhancing the operational capacity of the aircraft in adverse conditions.
The package also includes the implementation of the integrated BrIFD G5000H solution, which will give each helicopter a digital panel with four 12-inch widescreen high-resolution displays, along with two touch screen controllers that will function as the interface between the pilots and the integrated cockpit.
Strategic Reinforcement and Diplomatic Signal
According to military personnel and diplomats interviewed by CNN, the progress in the negotiations represents a sign of relief in the diplomatic tensions between Brasília and Washington.
The sale of this type of equipment occurs only for governments considered reliable partners of the United States, and there was concern that Brazil would be excluded from the program due to recent political disagreements.
The purchase is being conducted by the Ministry of Defense, through the Aeronautical Material Park of São Paulo, subordinate to the Aeronautics Command.
The 11 new aircraft will join the 13 UH-60L Black Hawks already in operation with the FAB. In May 2024, the Air Force spent R$ 282.8 million on logistical support and material supply for this fleet.
In the Armed Forces, the Black Hawk helicopters are used in transport, search, and rescue missions in isolated areas. The Army has also operated four units since 1997. The expectation is that Lula and Trump will meet in person next week during a summit of Asian countries in Malaysia.
UH-60L Black Hawk
The UH-60L Black Hawk represents one of the most emblematic and updated versions of the family of medium utility helicopters manufactured by the American Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. Used by dozens of countries, including Brazil, the model combines power, reliability, and versatility in transport, search and rescue, combat, and medical evacuation missions.
The original Black Hawk design dates back to the 1970s when the United States Army launched the UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System) program to replace the old UH-1 Huey.
The first version, the UH-60A, entered service at the end of that decade, marking a new era for military aviation. From 1989, the UH-60L emerged — a significant evolution that incorporated more powerful engines and improved systems.
The main difference between the UH-60A and UH-60L lies in the GE T700-GE-701C turbines, which provide greater thrust and reliability.
The model also received a reinforced transmission capable of handling the increased power and weight, as well as improvements in flight control and electrical systems. These updates made the L more capable of operating in adverse conditions and at high altitudes, maintaining high performance even in hot and humid environments.
The UH-60L can carry up to 11 equipped soldiers, in addition to three crew members — pilot, copilot, and crew chief. It reaches an average cruising speed of approximately 280 km/h and supports external loads of up to 4,100 kg.
With a length of 15.2 m and a main rotor diameter of 16.3 m, the helicopter is recognized for its stability and resilience in tactical missions.
In Brazil, the model is part of the fleets of the Army and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). The Army received its first units in 1997, while the FAB incorporated UH-60L helicopters configured for special operations and search and rescue (SAR) missions starting in 2008, enhancing its responsiveness in emergency situations.
Even after decades of operation, the UH-60L maintains its status as a strategic aircraft, a symbol of durability and efficiency. Its robust structure, combined with its adaptability, continues to ensure an active presence in military and humanitarian missions in various parts of the world.
