These 7 Appliances Are The Biggest Villains Of Your Electricity Bill! Find Out What They Are And How To Reduce Energy Consumption In Your Home.

When you receive your electricity bill at the end of the month, you probably wonder how the amount can be so high. The answer is closer than you think: the biggest villains of your energy bill are hidden in your own home.

These electronic devices, essential in everyday life, can become true traps for your wallet if not used consciously.

Want to find out who these enemies are and how to defeat them? Keep reading and get ready to be surprised by the impact of some apparently harmless habits that can make all the difference.

Understanding Electricity Consumption

Before identifying the villains, it is essential to understand how the electricity consumption system works in Brazil.

The energy you use at home goes through a long process, from generation to reaching your home. The distribution system is complex, fragmented among various utility companies, which causes considerable variation in energy tariff amounts among Brazilian states.

In 2024, for example, tariffs in the capitals ranged from R$ 0.570/kWh in Curitiba to R$ 0.754/kWh in Rio de Janeiro. These amounts depend on a variety of factors, including the current operator, subsidies, and energy demand.

Periods of drought can further increase these costs, as with the reduced capacity of hydroelectric plants, it is necessary to resort to more expensive energy sources, resulting in the infamous yellow and red tariff flags.

Electricity prices also vary depending on the time of use. During peak hours, usually between 5 PM and 10 PM, the cost can be higher due to increased demand when most people are home, using various electronic devices at the same time.

The Biggest Villains Of Your Electricity Bill

Now that you better understand how the electricity system works in Brazil, it is time to discover which are the main villains that cause your electricity bill to skyrocket and what you can do to minimize these costs.

Computers

For those working from home, computers can be true villains of the electricity bill. Devices left on for many hours a day, especially desktops, consume much more energy than one might think.

To reduce the impact, set your computer to enter power-saving mode or hibernation after a period of inactivity.

Devices In Standby

Many devices continue to consume energy even when they are turned off, as long as they remain plugged in.

This consumption may seem small, but when added up over the month, it can represent a good portion of your electricity bill. Completely turn them off or unplug them when not in use to avoid this unnecessary expense.

Electric Shower

The electric shower is one of the biggest villains of energy bills in Brazil. Common in almost all households, it can consume up to 90 kWh per month, depending on the frequency and duration of showers.

Models with higher power, used for long periods, can make your electricity bill skyrocket. One alternative to save is to reduce shower time and opt for milder temperatures on warmer days.

Televisions

The television, especially newer models and larger sizes, also consumes a significant amount of energy.

The habit of leaving the TV on even when no one is watching can considerably impact your bill. Use standby mode sparingly, as it also consumes energy, albeit in smaller amounts.

5. Heaters

During winter, electric heaters are a practical solution to keep the house warm, but they are also villains when it comes to energy consumption.

Since they work through electric resistances that convert electricity into heat, the consumption can be high, even in appliances with lower power. Prefer to heat smaller spaces and turn off the appliance when not in use.

6. Air Conditioning

On hot days, air conditioning may seem like a necessity, but it’s important to remember that it can be responsible for a significant portion of the increase in your electricity bill.

A 9,000 BTU unit can consume over 130 kWh per month, especially if used for long periods. To save, use the timer function to turn off the appliance during the night and keep doors and windows closed while it is on.

7. Refrigerators And Freezers

Refrigerators and freezers, although essential, are also among the major villains of energy consumption.

These appliances operate 24 hours a day, and their consumption can be high, especially if the seals are worn or the internal temperature is adjusted improperly. To minimize the impact on the bill, perform regular maintenance and adjust the temperature as needed, without exaggeration.

Did you know these appliances consumed so much energy? Which of these do you think has impacted your energy bill the most? Share your experiences in the comments!
