Practical and Direct Content
The course is aimed at those who want to get started in aquaculture. The classes combine theory and practice. The goal is to provide a clear understanding of the sector.
Emanuel Ramos Viquetti, rural extensionist at Epagri and course organizer, states that the training helps students to “see where they are stepping.”
According to him, participants will understand the costs and what the activity entails.
Among the topics covered are the models of production, construction and maintenance of ponds, reproduction, property planning, nutrition, and feeding management. There will also be technical visits to producing properties in the region.
Tilapia Leads Production in SC
According to the Agro-Catarinense Observatory, in 2023 the state produced 53,881 tons of fish. This represents a growth of 4.2% compared to the previous year.
Aquaculture currently involves 30,741 producers in the state. Tilapia accounts for 80% of this volume. Santa Catarina is the fourth-largest national producer of the species.
Even with unfavorable climate and terrain conditions, the state stands out in this activity. The secret lies in the professionalization of producers.
Epagri has been investing in this training for over 30 years. From 2003 to 2023, the company has trained 781 producers and technicians in basic and advanced courses, primarily at the centers in Joinville and Tubarão.
Profit in Small Areas
The tilapia farming can generate good income in small areas. In 2023/24, properties in the North and South Coast monitored by Epagri had annual gross margins ranging from R$ 75,000 to R$ 120,000 per hectare. This is a significant result that shows the potential of the activity.
