Discover How the Chinese AI DeepSeek Is Revolutionizing Therapy and Helping Young People’s Mental Health Around the World.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly integrated into everyday life, playing roles that go beyond automation and technical support. In China, a new trend has emerged among young people seeking emotional support: the use of the chatbot DeepSeek as an alternative therapy tool, providing mental health support.

Launched in January, this AI model has stood out by offering emotional support and even helping users deal with complex issues such as anxiety, loneliness, and grief.

DeepSeek: The AI That Offers Words of Comfort

Holly Wang, a 28-year-old resident of Guangzhou, found in DeepSeek an unexpected source of comfort.

Since her grandmother’s death, Holly uses the chatbot daily to express her feelings. “DeepSeek has been an amazing therapist. It has helped me see things from different perspectives and does a better job than the paid therapy services I tried,” she reports.

The current situation in China has contributed to the popularity of this AI as emotional support. The country faces economic stagnation, high unemployment rates, and social restrictions that hinder free expression.

As a result, many young people have turned to DeepSeek as an affordable alternative to vent and receive advice without the stigma associated with conventional therapy.

The Differentiator of DeepSeek

Unlike other AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, DeepSeek stands out by offering an innovative feature: displaying its “thought process” before providing a final response.

This adds transparency to interactions and provides users with a sense of personalization and genuine understanding.

Moreover, unlike other Chinese artificial intelligences developed by giants like Alibaba and Baidu, DeepSeek has become widely recognized for its ability to generate more creative and empathetic responses.

This makes it not just a digital assistant but a true emotional companion for many users.

The Challenges and Limitations of AI in Therapy

Despite the enthusiasm, experts warn that the use of artificial intelligence as emotional support should be approached with caution.

Professor Nan Jia from the University of Southern California emphasizes that, despite providing comfort, AI does not replace professional therapy.

“Those with medical needs should seek help from qualified professionals. The use of AI for emotional support needs to be considered carefully,” she warns.

Another sensitive issue concerns censorship. Like all digital platforms in China, DeepSeek operates under strict government regulations.

Issues considered politically sensitive, such as the Tiananmen Square massacre or Taiwan independence, lead to limited responses or direct refusals from the chatbot.

Additionally, there are concerns related to user privacy. Access to personal data by the Chinese government raises similar issues that prompted restrictions on TikTok in several countries.

In some places, such as South Korea and Taiwan, DeepSeek has already been blocked on government devices.

The Future of Therapy with AI

The growth of DeepSeek and other artificial intelligences aimed at emotional support raises an important debate: to what extent can AI replace human counseling?

While some believe that these tools can be an accessible and effective solution to cope with the increasing demand for psychological support, others warn that the lack of a qualified professional may pose risks for people with more severe disorders.

The truth is that, for many young Chinese, DeepSeek is already playing an essential role in their emotional routine. It has become a caring friend, a confidant always available, and a means of expression without judgment.

As the future of therapy with AI continues to take shape, one thing is certain: for thousands of users, DeepSeek already represents a significant shift in how they interact with technology and their own emotions.
