Tragedy in Butantã Exposes Failures in Safety and Oversight at Site Where Three Workers Died After Elevator Fall
A serious accident at a construction site in the western zone of São Paulo ended with the death of three workers. The incident occurred in the Butantã neighborhood, near the Raposo Tavares highway. The rack and pinion elevator they were in plunged from the 17th floor. The victims were 43, 26, and 20 years old. None of them survived the fall.
Ministry of Labor Interdicts Equipment
After the accident, the Ministry of Labor ordered the interdiction of ten elevators and three cranes at the same site. This measure was taken as a precaution. The State Public Security Secretariat also acted on the site, conducting an investigation to understand what caused the accident.
During the inspection, Ministry of Labor auditors found disorganization at the construction site. The mess was pointed out as a potential risk factor. The recommendation was for the area to be organized immediately, as part of the investigation and correction process.

Site Was Without Regular Oversight
The Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy (CREA) reported that the site had not been under regular oversight for some time. The agency committed to cooperating with the investigations, which are still ongoing.
So far, the construction company BRZ, responsible for the project, has not publicly commented on the case.
The accident raises alarms about the importance of constant oversight at construction sites. The tragedy reinforces the need for strict safety measures to protect workers’ lives. Investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of the accident and identify potential liabilities.
