This New Source of Green Diesel May Come From Biomass, Alcohol, Sugarcane, Plant and Animal Fats
Green Diesel in Focus – The Collegiate Board of ANP approved today (12/3) the start of the public consultation/audience process regarding a draft resolution that addresses the specification of a new biofuel to be marketed in Brazilian territory. This is green diesel, a renewable fuel for diesel cycle combustion engines, produced from renewable raw materials such as plant and animal fats, sugarcane, alcohol, and biomass.

The new fuel will be added to fossil diesel, which currently must contain 12% biodiesel, resulting in a ternary mixture, i.e., a fuel composed of the three products.

Every time a river flows into the sea, an amount of energy equivalent to a 120-meter waterfall is silently wasted, but Japan has just inaugurated the world’s first power plant that captures this waste and transforms it into electricity 24 hours a day without sun, wind, or fuel.

The new biofuel is predominantly composed of paraffinic hydrocarbons, having properties similar to those of diesel from fossil sources and differing from biodiesel, which is a mixture of fatty acid esters with similar properties.
The regulatory proposal is in line with the National Biofuels Policy (RenovaBio), as set forth in Law No. 13,576, of 12/26/2017, which aims to expand the use of biofuels in the Brazilian energy matrix, focusing on energy security, predictability for the competitive participation of various biofuels in the national market, and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.
Green Diesel May Benefit Aviation Sector
The regulation of green diesel could also enable the production and marketing of aviation bio-kerosene, already regulated by ANP Resolution No. 778, of 2019, since biofuel production in the context of biorefinery generates different bio products in the same process.
The initiative is the result of ANP’s regulatory impact analysis regarding the inclusion of this new biofuel in the Brazilian market, as well as studies of the international specifications of green diesel marketed internationally. The public consultation period for the proposal will be 45 days.
