Senator Josh Hawley recently introduced a bill that aims for severe restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies developed in China, with a particular focus on the DeepSeek system, an emerging competitor in the AI market.

The bill, which proposes strict measures against the promotion of AI capabilities within China, stands out as one of the most aggressive actions ever taken against Chinese technology. If approved, it could result in severe bans and even prison sentences for those who violate its provisions.

Hawley’s proposal states that any “technology or intellectual property” originating from China cannot be imported into the United States.

Recently launched, DeepSeek has distinguished itself by matching the performance of American tech giants.

Its rapid ascent has raised concerns in Congress, particularly regarding the efficiency with which the AI chatbots from this platform operate, utilizing fewer resources compared to Western alternatives.

This efficiency raises heightened fears that US tech companies are wasting billions on AI investments, while smaller-scale alternatives could deliver similar or even better results.

Moreover, the impact of AI on the military sector and surveillance technologies has fueled worries about China’s interests with DeepSeek.

Lawmakers warn that if strict restrictions are not put in place, the use of this technology could further enhance Chinese military capabilities, which would pose a significant risk to US security.
