A Milestone in Sustainability for Albras with Atlas Renewable Energy and Hydro REIN
In the Brazilian energy landscape, a pioneering partnership promises to transform the future of aluminum production. Atlas Renewable Energy, a reference in renewable energy solutions in Latin America, along with Hydro REIN, the renewable energy division of the giant Hydro, marked the start of operations at the Boa Sorte Solar Complex in Paracatu, Minas Gerais. This project not only symbolizes significant progress in the use of clean energy but also highlights Albras’ commitment, as the largest primary aluminum producer in Brazil, to adopt more sustainable practices.
With an impressive capacity of 438 MW, the complex has the ability to generate 920 GWh per year, enough power to supply approximately 394,000 homes. This supply of renewable energy will cover about 12% of Albras’ energy needs, under a contract that extends over two decades, marking a significant step toward sustainability in the sector.
Innovation and Sustainability in Focus
Fábio Bortoluzo, director of Atlas in Brazil, emphasizes the Boa Sorte project as a historic milestone, being the first Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for clean generation signed with Albras. This venture not only broke barriers in financing renewable projects with support from BNDES but also reinforced Atlas’ commitment to delivering projects on time and within budget, maintaining a completion rate of 100%.

Brazilian researchers develop a catalyst made with abundant metals that increases the efficiency of green hydrogen production and can replace expensive materials, creating a promising alternative to expand the use of clean energy worldwide.
The solar complex, which occupies an area equivalent to more than a thousand soccer fields, was built with over 16,000 tons of metal structures and resulted in more than 2 million hours of work. The adoption of advanced technologies allowed the Atlas production team real-time integrated management, enabling the project to become operational two months ahead of schedule.
Socio-Environmental Development and the Future of Renewable Energy
Atlas Renewable Energy not only leads by example in technological innovation but also demonstrates a strong commitment to socio-environmental development. About 2,900 workers were involved in the construction of the Boa Sorte complex, with a notable female participation, reflecting the company’s efforts to promote a more inclusive industry. Through initiatives like the program “We Are Part of the Same Energy,” Atlas has empowered women for technical roles, leaving a lasting legacy of social transformation.
The strategic partnership between Atlas Renewable Energy, Hydro REIN, and Albras highlights the potential of renewable energies to transform traditionally carbon-intensive industries. Albras, with the support of these partnerships, advances in its mission to produce green aluminum, consolidating a long-term strategy focused on sustainability and energy transition.
This collaboration illustrates a model to be followed, not only by the aluminum sector but by the entire industry, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve operational excellence while contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future. The Boa Sorte Solar Complex, therefore, is not just an energy project; it is a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and social progress for Brazil and the world.
