Equinor is one of the signatory companies of the manifesto in defense of the sustainable development agenda and combating deforestation in the Amazon, addressed to the Vice President of the Republic and President of the National Council of the Legal Amazon, Hamilton Mourão.  The Norwegian company is engaged in this initiative alongside a group of companies and business groups from the industrial, agricultural, and services sectors, as well as institutions, including the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), of which Equinor is a member. In addition to the Federal Government, the document was also sent to the Federal Supreme Court, the Federal Senate, the Chamber of Deputies, and the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

By defending the fight against illegal deforestation in the Amazon and sustainable development, Equinor recognizes that protecting forests is one of the most important tools to combat climate change. “Brazil has enormous reserves of oil and gas and high potential for the development of renewable energies, such as solar and wind. The country is one of Equinor’s top three areas and where we will grow significantly. Our operations in Brazil are based on the principles of sustainable development, and this agenda is fundamental to our long-term strategy.”, says Paulo Van der Ven, VP of Sustainability at Equinor Brazil.

In the manifesto, the signatory companies make themselves available to contribute to topics such as:

  • · Uncompromising and comprehensive fight against illegal deforestation in the Amazon and other Brazilian biomes;
  • · Social and economic inclusion of local communities to ensure forest preservation;
  • · Minimization of environmental impact in the use of natural resources, seeking efficiency and productivity in the resulting economic activities;
  • · Valuing and preserving biodiversity as an integral part of business strategies;
  • · Adoption of carbon credit negotiation mechanisms;
  • · Directing financing and investments towards a circular and low-carbon economy; and
  • · Incentive packages for the economic recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic conditioned to a circular and low-carbon economy.

The document concludes by emphasizing the great potential of resources that Brazil has to move towards a planned and sustainable future.
