Executive Statement from Walmart Reinforces Growing Concern Among Large Companies and Corporate Leaders in the United States in Light of the Advance of Education in Artificial Intelligence in China, Where Students Receive Annual Training in AI Since Elementary School and Expand the Global Offer of Technology Talents.

The Walmart executive warned that the United States needs to enhance training in artificial intelligence for workers and students, after a company executive stated that countries like China are already teaching AI to children as young as five.

Walmart Points Out Economic Impact of Training in Artificial Intelligence

Major employers, including Deloitte, Verizon, and Walmart, have started to implement extensive training programs in artificial intelligence for employees in response to the growing demand for tech skills in the labor market.

According to Donna Morris, Walmart’s Chief People Officer, the discussion goes beyond the corporate environment and can directly influence the economic competitiveness of the United States in the coming years.

In an interview with Fortune, Morris stated that how countries invest in technological training reveals national strategies for developing professional competencies.

She cited the example of China, where five-year-old children are already learning DeepSeek, highlighting that this model demonstrates an early focus on developing capacities related to artificial intelligence.

China Expands AI Education From the First Years of School

In various Chinese regions, students are being introduced to concepts of artificial intelligence early in their school life. Primary and secondary schools in Beijing plan to offer at least eight hours of annual AI instruction.

The content includes proper use of chatbots and discussions related to the ethics of artificial intelligence. Chinese students also spend, on average, more time in class than American students.

Data indicates that this educational investment is already contributing to the formation of a large base of specialized talent in artificial intelligence.

A 2020 study from the Paulson Institute indicated that nearly one-third of top global AI professionals were born in China.

Training of Talents Concerns Business Leaders in the USA

Executives assert that without an expansion of technological training, the flow of talent from the United States risks falling behind other countries.

The concern led more than 400 CEOs to sign a letter sent to lawmakers the previous year advocating for mandatory inclusion of computer science and artificial intelligence in the American school curriculum.

Among the signatories were Satya Nadella from Microsoft, Tony Xu from DoorDash, and Brian Chesky from Airbnb.

In the document, business leaders expressed that students need to be prepared to act as creators of AI-based technology, and not just consumers.

Walmart Advocates Extensive Training for Workers in AI

For Walmart, closing the talent gap starts with direct investments made by companies in their employees.

Donna Morris stated that major employers must actively work to prepare their teams for an increasingly automated, digitized, and AI-driven professional environment.

According to her, training in AI represents an investment applicable to different functions and economic sectors.

Morris emphasized that artificial intelligence is practically independent of the type of work being performed, although the application varies according to the professional activity performed.

AI Skills Become a Requirement in the Job Market

Recent reports indicate that skills related to artificial intelligence are becoming essential in virtually all professional fields.

According to data from LinkedIn, AI literacy is currently the fastest-growing skill among workers.

A 2024 survey showed that two-thirds of business leaders stated they would not hire candidates lacking skills related to artificial intelligence.

For Walmart, collective training initiatives can redefine workforce preparation in light of ongoing technological transformations.

The executive stated that if companies collectively increase investment in training, the impacts could reach the entire economy.
