The Project Under Development in the USA Aims to Replace Natural Gas at the Baytown Complex with Blue Hydrogen. ExxonMobil Signed a Contract with Technip Energies to Start Designing the New Renewable Energy Production Plant.
The multinational company ExxonMobil announced last Monday, (01/30), an important new step for its future in the energy market. It is a partnership with Technip Energies for the development of the design for the company’s new blue hydrogen production plant, which will be installed at the Baytown complex in Texas, USA. This is expected to be the largest facility in the global energy market, contributing to the organization’s energy transition.
ExxonMobil Signs Contract with Technip Energies and Begins Development of the Design for Its New Blue Hydrogen Production Plant
The energy giant ExxonMobil is eyeing opportunities in the renewable sector for the coming years.
This is a market that has been attracting investors from all countries for research, innovation, and development projects for new renewable energies.

The company is working on a project to install the largest blue hydrogen plant in the world at the Baytown complex, located in the United States.
Now, it has taken an important step for the development of the venture by signing a design and engineering contract with Technip Energies.
They will be responsible for the structural development of the blue hydrogen plant, which will have a production capacity of 27.8 million tonnes per day.
According to the company, the final investment decision for the project is expected to come by 2024, depending on stakeholders’ support, regulatory approval, and market conditions.
The start of production at the new ExxonMobil blue hydrogen plant is expected to occur between 2027 and 2028, according to the project timeline.
The site will be integrated with the largest olefins plant in the USA, thus ensuring low-carbon products for the American market.
New Blue Hydrogen Production Plant Could Reduce Scope 1 and 2 Emissions by Up to 30% at the Baytown Industrial Complex in the USA
The main objective of ExxonMobil with the development of the green hydrogen plant project is to minimize the environmental impacts of its operations.
The company expects to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions from the Baytown complex by up to 30% by replacing natural gas as a fuel source for the industry.
Blue hydrogen is a fuel produced from natural gas, but with carbon capture and storage, thus allowing for a greater environmental commitment with its use.
More than 98% of the CO2 associated with the oil company’s production in the region will be captured and permanently stored, representing approximately a volume of seven million tonnes per year.
This carbon capture and storage network in blue hydrogen production at ExxonMobil’s new plant will also be used by other companies seeking to invest in the segment.
Thus, the energy company’s project will contribute to a shift in resource production in various locations.
“This project allows us to offer significant volumes of hydrogen and ammonia with low carbon content to third-party customers in support of their decarbonization efforts,” highlighted Dan Ammann, President of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions.
Following the signing of the contract with Technip Energies for the design and engineering of the plant, ExxonMobil takes another step towards the completion of its blue hydrogen production project.
