The Revolutionary Electric FPSO From Petrobras Will Enhance Oil Quality and Promises to Reduce More Than 5 Million Tons of Carbon Dioxide Over the Production Cycle.

On Monday, May 6, the FPSO Maria Quitéria — Brazil’s first electric oil exploration platform — departed from China heading to the Jubarte field, located in the pre-salt layer of the Campos Basin, off the coast of Espírito Santo. Arrival is expected in the second half of this year. Petrobras contracted Yinson for the construction and chartering of this unit.

Petrobras’ revolutionary electric FPSO has the capacity to produce up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day and process around 5 million cubic meters of natural gas, with expectations to start production in early 2025.

FPSO Maria Quitéria Is the First Electric Oil Exploration Platform in Brazil

The FPSO Maria Quitéria is the first electric platform in Brazil. The floating production, storage, and offloading unit (FPSO) is equipped with advanced technologies for decarbonization, including a combined cycle power generation system, which can reduce CO2 emissions by around 20%.

The Maria Quitéria platform vessel is expected to begin oil extraction in 2025. Petrobras’ president, Jean Paul Prates, announced significant investments in the state of Espírito Santo, totaling R$ 22 billion over the next four years in oil and gas exploration and production. These investments include the operation of Maria Quitéria, the state-owned company’s first fully electric platform.

Additionally, plans for the state include investments in the company’s building in Vitória, the Edivit, which is part of the project to strengthen Petrobras’ regional headquarters.

The announcement was made on September 19, 2023, by Jean Paul Prates during a visit to Espírito Santo to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the start of pre-salt exploration in Brazil, which began in this state.

Petrobras Will Reach a New Level and Promises to Revolutionize Oil and Gas Exploration Worldwide

Jean Paul Prates emphasized that the new electric platform Maria Quitéria will enhance the quality of the oil produced by Petrobras, adding more value.

The FPSO Maria Quitéria, a type of FPSO unit for production, storage, and transfer of oil, will operate in the Jubarte field, part of the pre-salt layer of the Campos Basin, with a capacity to produce 100,000 barrels of oil per day.

The operation of this platform will result in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, with a projected reduction of more than 5 million tons of carbon dioxide over the production cycle, thanks to the adoption of advanced technologies.
