Massive Fire Spread Across CATL Factory, Tesla’s Battery Supplier in China

On the morning of September 29, a sudden fire broke out at CATL’s Z plant, located in Fujian province, China. This factory, which was built in 2020 and plays a significant role in the battery sector, supplies products to automotive companies like Tesla.

Founded in 2011, CATL is the world’s largest manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles (NEV). With thirteen factories distributed globally, the company holds nearly 50% of the Chinese market, establishing itself as a leader in supplying batteries to various automakers.

The Z plant, where the fire occurred, was completed in September 2020 and is known for its high technology, having been awarded as a model factory of Industry 4.0. The incident did not cause significant damage to overall production, according to the company.

Fire Details

At 11:26 AM on September 29, the Publicity Department of Dongqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone received an emergency call, notifying about the fire that started in a standalone building within CATL’s Z plant.

Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene to contain the fire, which occurred in a high-temperature static block covering an area of 15,000 square meters. Thanks to the factory’s monitoring system, the fire was detected early, allowing for a rapid response from emergency teams.

CATL’s President, Robin Zeng, stated that the fire did not pose a major issue and that the overall operation of the plant was minimally affected. However, it is still unknown how the incident may influence the supply of batteries to companies like Tesla and other automakers that depend on production from the Z plant.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Although the situation was controlled without casualties, the impact in terms of battery supply remains an open question. The Z plant is one of the main suppliers of batteries for electric vehicles in China, and any prolonged interruption in its production could have repercussions in the market.

Despite the potential severity of the fire, the quick response and effective control minimized the consequences. The incident could have been much more devastating, as exemplified by a fire in a factory in South Korea that recently resulted in 22 deaths. Fortunately, the event at CATL’s plant ended without tragedy.
