Authorization given by the Government of Bahia releases a new stage of the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge, which will have a linear support platform, construction sites in Salvador and São Roque, materials coming from China, and direct connection between Salvador and the Island of Itaparica
The construction of the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge gained a new stage this week, after the Government of Bahia authorized the start of land works in the municipality of Vera Cruz, in an area granted by the Union. The intervention marks an operational advance of the project, which foresees a connection of 12.4 kilometers between Salvador and the Island of Itaparica.
With this extension, the bridge will be about ten times larger than the Guaratuba Bridge, inaugurated on the coast of Paraná. In addition, the work over the Bay of All Saints is expected to exceed R$ 10 billion in investment.
According to the Government of Bahia and the Extraordinary Secretariat of the West Road System Salvador-Itaparica Bridge, the structure will hold the position of the largest bridge in Latin America in extension over water. Therefore, the enterprise becomes central among the major road infrastructure projects in the country.

Land works begin in Vera Cruz with support platform
This week’s authorization allows teams to advance interventions in a federal area granted in the municipality of Vera Cruz. In this location, the project foresees the implementation of a linear platform, a structure that will serve as support during the works.
This platform will support teams, machines, equipment, and operations related to construction. Thus, the new stage prepares the ground for more intensive activities in the construction sites.
In addition to Vera Cruz, the project maintains construction sites in Salvador and São Roque. Thus, the construction organizes different work fronts in strategic points of the future connection.
Bridge will have access roads, expressway, and highway duplication
The Salvador-Itaparica Bridge project is not limited to the main crossing over the bay. In addition to the 12.4 kilometers of bridge, the system foresees 4.4 kilometers of structured access roads.
The planning also includes 22 kilometers of expressway in Itaparica. Furthermore, the enterprise includes the duplication of 8 kilometers of state highway.
With this, the proposal seeks to integrate the bridge with existing roads and expand the circulation capacity in the region. Therefore, the access roads are an essential part of the road system.
Materials from China arrived at the Port of Salvador
On March 30, 2026, a cargo ship departed from Shanghai, China, carrying materials intended for the initial phases of the project. The vessel arrived at the Port of Salvador on May 18, 2026.
According to the Government of Bahia, the shipment brought 44 containers and more than 800 tons of materials. Since then, teams have been directing the items to the construction sites.
The equipment will aid in assembling the work platform in water. This structure will provide access to heavy machinery, workers, and equipment in the operational areas of the construction.
Project was contracted by PPP after bidding won in 2019
The Salvador-Itaparica Bridge progresses through a public-private partnership, with participation from the Government of Bahia. A consortium formed by Chinese companies won the bidding at the end of 2019.
Subsequently, the parties signed the contract in 2020. However, the pandemic delayed the project’s progress in the early years of the decade.
At the beginning of 2024, technical teams conducted surveys on the seabed, a necessary step to assess the conditions of the area where the structure will be implemented. Now, with the release of land works, the project enters a new phase of execution.
The information is included in releases from the Government of Bahia, the Extraordinary Secretariat of the West Road System Salvador-Itaparica Bridge, and the Ministry of Management and Innovation.
